Will Jelavic's 2012/13 surpass Yakubu's 2007/08?

Sorry man, I totally can't help myself.

HAHA, Neither can Moyes.

I'm a hopeless optimist. Every season I do this then he cut's me to the bone with long ball, senseless football for 6 months and early cup exits to the the biggest spenders in league two.

Then in Jan/Feb we fall back in love.

Dont get this 'defenders will be more wise' or 'defenders will suss him out' lark people spout. RVP, Rooney, Drogba have played in the PL for a considerable amount of time and still managed to score goals, pretty sure by your reckoning, defenders would be more wise to them etc. The fact is, he is a goalscorer, put a good quality ball into the box 9 times out of 10 he will be there waiting to knock it in.

There are plenty of examples of relatively little-known center forwards arriving in the Prem and fading after an impressive start (Demba Ba, Amir Zaki, Peter Odemwinge). Rooney, RVP and Drogba have been superstars pretty much from the point they became senior players, and so have always been given maximum scrutiny by opposition defenders - they've been dealing with the same baseline level of defensive scrutiny since very early in their careers.

Jelavic (and Ba, Zaki, Odemwingie) on the other hand came into the league as a little-known-yet-senior player, and so wasn't under as much scrutiny as the star players in the league. Now that he's played himself on to everybody's potential superstar lists the attention he's given by opposing defenders will increase accordingly.

That was my logic anyway, reductionist and convoluted though it seems. It's up to Jelavic to show which bracket of player he belongs in.

Doubt he will, we need more creativity in the midfield for him. Hope he does though :-)

The thing i like with Jelavic which is overlooked a lot is hes brings others into play in very dangerous positions. His ball retention and distribution as well as footballing intellegence is excellent, we look a far more potent team overall and in midfield with him in it in a goalscoring sense. The Yak was dead eye, and a very good player but he rarely boosted the stats of those around him. If you compare our midfield stats in the second half of the season in terms of assists and goals - a lot of the team really improved with Jelavic in it, he also provideds brilliant penetration and distrabuiton. The triade between him, Mofro and Pienaar - stats wise and i guess on the eye as well - was as good as anything in the league in the second half of the season. The big question is can that be replicated over 38+ games - Jurys still out for me.

Davey will defo go with Fellaini in behind Jelavic for me, he loves his physicality - while both have great balance and engine to their game.

Very good post. I would also add that his strength seems to be one touch finishing, so it's not like we need him to Ronaldo and dribble past people all the time.

The part bolded is nailed on by the way. This is how we're gonna play this year, through Fellaini.
