It's a clichè, but he was the hero we needed at the time. When you can't afford or attract a big name forward, sometimes having a big meat head up front to terrorise (quite literally) the opposition can give you something to cheer for.

Don't think that mentality would be a good fit for a manager though, especially at this level.

Although it would be worth it just to see him fold up Pardew like a napkin and drop kick him back into the dug out for giving him lip! lol

He was indeed the hero we needed. He was also potentially a cracking player. Tons of ability and pretty unique.

That said he was not the hero we got often enough as he was constantly getting sent off for stupid stuff (I was fuming at the Scharner, Freund and Bobic sendings off at the time for example as we were in a bad position and needed our best stiker) missed loads of games due to injury (not hard to see why with this story) and has been made into some legend even though for massive parts of his career he has took the piss out of us.

I have met him a couple of times and to be honest he has always seemed like a decent bloke and of course he will have grown up a lot but I always think of what could have been with Ferguson and the reason that he didn't achieve what his ability could have brought him is purely down to him and that annoys me.

What's the deal with dunc and the grog. Didn't he give up drinking after his playing career so he's been off the drink while getting his badges and working in a coaching capacity.
No matter how untouchable he is, there's no way in hell he'd still be coaching at the club if he still had a temper like that.

Hard to disagree, as painful as that feels. He was a beacon, of sorts, in some dark days. But his career v status/earnings, really looks quite poor.
