Why are the English so uncreative?

You must admit though, that when it comes to posting photos of fit birds, McB is numero 1. dominating the field with humiliating ease.
I can't post photos of anything coz I'm useless on the computer. Some of you however, are very nifty at changing your avatar and stuff but can't find time to lighten our hearts with visions of pure beauty like Macca does. Ashamed to be British me.

Too many come out with that, pull yourself together man, stiff upper lip

Sometimes , McB , you make it so-o-o-o easy , cocka .

Keep swimming sonny

In our turdless pools.

We pulled your pants down and gave a good spanking that night if I remember.

You started full strength, then when we bent you over you had to throw on some no-names to avoid complete embarrassment.

Good times.

Remind us again what the Aussies have given the world? As the only things that spring to mind are erm.....Rolf (can you see what it is yet)Harris?Paul Hogan?Nieghbours? I think the only half decent thing to come out of Oz was Mad max.
O and the Ashes.

The computer was designed by von Neumman I believe, although Turing played a huge role. Turing himself though is indicative of this isn't he? I mean the man killed himself due to the stigma he suffered for being different! Moving forward 70 years and Britain has little place in the computer industry. Microchips are dominated by Intel and AMD, although ARM deserve mention for their work in mobile chips. Networking is dominated by Cisco. Software by MS. The web by Google. The world of computing now revolves around California. It's certainly not Britain.

Electronics is still dominated by the Japanese. The iPhone etc. were designed by a Brit, who's working in America. It wasn't designed in Britain. Of the big companies we have, Vodafone have perhaps the best place in their industry but even then the real change is delivered by Nokia and the hardware suppliers in Scandinavia. Where we have shown creativity is in the finance industry and the City is the leading financial centre in the world. But that's it. There isn't another major industry that we dominate.

It's possible. I mean F1 is a fine example. The majority of teams are based in Britain and we lead the field in that small field. Why has that not spread elsewhere? What is F1 doing that other sectors aren't? It's been mentioned that we were great 150 years ago in the industrial revolution, and we were, but that was long ago. Now the world is changed by America or Asian nations.

I say again, what British startup has gone on to dominate its field in the past decade?[/QUOTE]

Dyson?

You could make a historical case for the UK being the most creative place on earth...starting before the Industrial Revolution. However, we're no longer the force we once were. That shouldn't come as a surprise...

We're the most mature economy on the planet. We were first up with textiles, steel making, coal, etc etc so we also exhausted these markets before everyone else. Of course the Japanese make better cars, electronics, ships, computers etc than us - their skills are fresher, their outlook is free of historical baggage...

So we've reinvented ourselves as a service economy and are currently paying the price for that as the jobs in such industries are very insecure compared to the generation of our fathers and grandfathers.

So now we lead the world in.....

Broadcasting? Education? Reality Television? (God help us all)

The rot started with Thatcher who truly begot Blair. As Maggie was worshipped by the electorate, her opposition spawned a generation of politicians who would do or say anything to get elected (Tony Blair?). So our society has gradually ceased to think and to act independantly, leading to the erosion of creativity that is implied in Bruce's original question.

Smallprint: all allegations of 'not thinking' do not apply to posters on GOT, natch....

mclaren f1 haven't done too bad.

Please do not go the footie route , my brother !!!
Until the Millenium , your compadres stuggled to know what to do with , " A Footie " , to use the vernacular .
You have a worse record than Costa Rica , Iran , Peru , Greece , Nigeria , ... need I continue ???
Granted , you had a result at West Ham . However , it only gains gravitas by the very fact of OUR international standing , having invented the game - of course - .
Still , the world my one day adopt Aussie Rules , or Beach Volleyball , and then YOU'LL be quids in !!!
