It's not an issue of confidence.

People were saying Jelavic's issue was confidence at the start of last season. Every time he scored people said that would give him 'confidence'.

He's simply not good enough for the Premier League. He had a fantastic run when he came in January, then he was utterly figured out and hasn't been any good since.

I'd be happy to let him play in the FA Cup, but he's had countless chances in the league. You have to get to a point where you say enough is enough.

Fair enough Dell, cant say I'm a fan of 4-4-2 myself, dont mind him starting Jelavic with Lukaku coming on and proving who;s top dog, feel that sends out the right message, and I just love watching Ross play, whenever he's not there we lose that spark

How does Lukaku need 'a kick up the arse'?

Oh yeah, because he's not living up to the fine tradition of Everton in the last few years of producing players who score a goal per game. Get the Croatian goal machine in.

*astounded*

A choice between 2 strikers who cant hold the ball up or trap a ball

Exactly, for all of our nice possession through defence and midfield, invariably the ball doesn't stick when it reaches these two, Jelavić through lack of body strength and Lukaku through poor close control.

It's been so long since I've seen Velios I can't remember if he has this in his locker.

The people who think Jelavic should start over Lukaku are the same people who think Oviedo is a better LB than Baines. And for the record, I was one of the few giving Oviedo plaudits before his first start this season (vaults self). A few (in this case one) performances aren't enough.. you have to look at the whole body of work. If you do, you'll see that Jelavic has not been good enough.

I can't understand the argument that Lukaku needs a rest either as he will have had a week and half since his last match. He will be fresh and ready for Norwich.

I'd start Jelavic. It's clear that Lukaku needs a rest, and well he can be very effective from the bench if needed.
It wouldn't be dropping Lukaku from the team, just not starting him!

this thread is a bit pointless anyway other than to gauge fan sentiment. We don't pick the team (obviously), but also I don't even feel there is much controversy over Roberto's striker choice for the Norwich game. Lukaku is clearly his preferred striker (rightfully so) and will be well rested come match day. Martinez will start Lukaku.. there is no doubt in my mind.

Lukaku. Jelavic is almost certainly leaving so there is no point risking him getting injured and undermining Romelu's confidence by starting him.

Roberto's comments i.e saying he thought Jela looked sharper in the box than he'd ever seen him and he made runs where he could have been played in, but wasn't....

Also saying he doesn't particularly want to sell him...

To me, it seems Jelavic was lain down a challenge today, and he responded. Why would he really want to play for QPR if he can fight for a place with us? Roberto just got the best we've seen out of him in a LONG time. Long may that continue....

It's always amusing watching a player trying to play his way to a transfer/new contract etc. You always ask the question - "why don't you play like that every week?"

Oviedo has a month of superb form, Jelavic has had one game against QPR, its quite clearly not the same

Lukaku.

Jelavic has earned the right to come off the bench again, but that's all. Lukaku has scored 9 goals this season and would've had 10 days to rest up.

If Lukaku is rubbish against Norwich and Jelavic comes on and performs/scores, then maybe there can be a debate about him starting the next fixture.

I don't think he's asking us to offer him a new contract. Although, apparently, he was about the same time as his loss of form.

Not sure what you're on about tbh. Roberto seems to have gotten a performance out of him and he's publicly stated he doesn't want to sell him....

I think he's managed it superbly.....
