Wish we could have conversations like this without insulting fellow blues, like.

Ihaters is a good sort and shouldn't be called names just for having a slightly different opinion.

You're right I shouldn't be calling anyone anything on an internet forum. Genuinely, I apologise. It's an offensive term at the best of times anyway and not something I'd use in real life so shouldn't use it on here.

About 4mil, a new player/not losing a player, wages for a quality signing.
Other than that, being above Liverpool, confidence, the amount of enjoyable weekends as we pick up those extra points etc...
Never mind, best just to ignore the whole season until the last weeks, turn on and see how we did because the rest of the year doesnt matter.
Personally I get a buzz from getting 3 points on a weekend, but if you only enjoy winning cups and nothing else then good luck to you as an Everton fan, guess it explains the need for melodrama if you've not enjoyed a game for over 20 years.

This is exactly the point some are making. You are justifying NOT winning anything !?!?

Everton used to be about aiming for cups n pots. Not the odd 3 point and good sing song, while celebrating another £4 million going mssing.

Winning games, is what is needed to win them silver things.

I would swap the season we had last year, with the on Liverpool had.

Joe and Dave, both good managers and have their own style.
They have given us brief moments to relish in a football structure dominated by more or less the same teams year after year.

He took over a side rock bottom and straight away turned over our local rivals who were streets ahead of us. Something Moyes has failed to do time after time. He kept us up comfortably. Something Moyes gets loads of credit for despite the fact the situation Joe took over was far more serious.

The next season he finished sixth with a squad of largely poor footballers.

The season after he was in a poor position when he lost his job. Moyes who was in an equally poor position after his first full season kept his.

Now Joe never lost a derby. Important??? For me it's massive. Joe won two honours giving most Evertonians under 30 the best day of their lives. Important??? For me it's massive.

I'm still not sure how winning FA CUP game after game then beating the best side in the country twice is a fluke though? How many teams in the history of that cup have retained it? Surely then all cup wins are flukes.

Nobody's ever retained the CL in the modern era. Was every win a fluke?

Perhaps I'm the Geoff for advocating winning trophies???

Perhaps neither are Geff's and the need for name calling simply isn't required?

People being less than respectful about Howard in other threads and big joe not being rated . It doesn't mean you can't think moyes has done ok but those two won trophies but apparently that's not what it's about for some .

All a bit odd for me .

As would I, I would keep the decade we've just had in place of the one we had before though despite winning a cup, and I would rather finish fighting for europe than 15th. Because I like winning thigs, that includes games at the weekend. And the 6th placed trophy is more fun to get than the not got relegated trophy.

Mind you, i'd rather finish 6th and win a cup every year but it didn't look like Royle was going to do that any more than Moyes, and I think apart from one season, Moyes has been thouroughly excellent in the league which is important to me.

Personally, after the 90's I had had more than my fill of mates laughing at us losing yet again and languishing near relagation..
Moyes stopped that, got us a 4th spot and a final, that's good for me. He's had one poor season in the league in 11, that's pretty good. More importantnly, half me mates support teams beneath us now, the others have a lot more respect for our club than we had before.

league positions have no bearing on whether a cup win was a fluke or not. We thoroughly deserved that cup win, deservedly beating 3 of the best teams in the land on the way to winning it.

My last post on the topic (for a while) because I feel I've kind of hijacked the thread:

Of course we deserved it, no one said we didn't, we worked our b**ts off to get it and got the reward we deserved... (similar run to Moyes final in fact, maybe we should just hope for hard teams from now on).. if however we put in that much effort the following year, we still probably wouldn't of won it because of the amount of luck involved when your not the bigger, better team. Which like it or not.. was us.

As for league position not relating to cups... Here are the FA cup winners since 1995. 4 regular teams.. known as the sky 4 due to their usual finishing positions. I therefore cannot help but disagree with the lack of correlation between the two.

United
Chealsea
Arsenal
Liverpool

Portsmouth
Manchester City

The other Two have won it once (flukes).

League cup though, how we've never won that is a mystery as it seems anyone can turn up and win it... Except Everton.

League cup though, how we've never won that is a mystery as it seems anyone can turn up and win it... Except Everton.

I am aware that the better sides tend to win the cups more often, I was just saying that a club's league position has no bearing on whether their cup win was a fluke or not.

Lads I don't even want to win a cup anyway relegation is a dead cert after it anyway, I mean look at the likes of Portsmouth and Birmingham, despite the shocking misuse of money from both clubs the voodoo curse that strikes anyone that isn't Chelsea would see us doomed to the EvoStick Northern Play Off Semi's within 3 seasons, nailed.

I voted for Billy Bingham.

But it was Dave Watson who took charge after Royle, and the Kendall season was the worst season of football I have ever seen from an Everton side. I love Kendall, but he was completely out of touch with the game

oh crumbs! you're right, of course...my dodgy memory the other day mixing up Pat Nevin with Don Hutchison has come back to haunt me.

Joe Royle made me proud to be Blue, even just his interviews. The man was so proud to manage our great club, and it showed.

With Moyes....it looks like he is doing us a favour by managing us, and WE should be lucky.

And that drains me.

I actually agree with this, and it's making me reconsider my vote.

Big Joe was a warm character and a real Blue, but a bit of a journeyman manager if we're being real about it. Moyes is along way ahead of him when it comes to managing a football team IMHO.
That said, Joe should never have left us the way he did - could have sent us over the edge. If it was just over a failure to sign a player then it seems like a total over-reaction on his part. Does anyone know what really happened such that Joe felt he had to leave?

Agree though that Joe had some style and passion about him that Moyes lacks. He was a natural for us in that respect - had he stayed I think we would have stabilised but couldn't see Joe ever turning us into a strong side tbh.

Good balanced post, mate.

It's not. Mind only two managers in this list have done it.

at the danger of remembering wrong again, i'm quite sure Kendall Mark II had us finishing 8th. Anyone know or will we have to google that one?
