What's the plan?

Spot on but i do think Sigurdsson is the better player by far

I'll agree on different.

Sig far more consistent, covers more ground, more of a goalscoring threat, better set pieces.

Barkley dribbles far better, creates more chances from open play and faster.

I think they'd do well together.

Our football at times last year was very good - when it clicked.

It's simply going to be a case of waiting for the side to bed in and click. Hard with so many new signings and injuries, but it'll come.

The first half vs Hajduk Split - we played some great stuff. Fast, incisive play and really we should have scored more.

Have patience before making a sweeping statement.
That first half in particular I have mentioned a few times. We played two wingers and looked balanced.

Doubt we'll be doing that too often whilst we've got 3-4CAMs on the pitch

this weekend is the most important game so far in terms of our progression /plan...a team we are trying to catch and most of our players now fit

we shall see

Have to agree tbh and really have to question what the strategy was behind our transfer dealings.
Expecting a lot of 1-0, 1-1 games this season.
Paying all that money for Sigurdsson and then not having anyone in the box for him to hit, seems especially strange.

Can't he cross the ball on the ground?

Koeman clearly prefers a 4-3-3 with "inside forwards" playing in the wide positions of the front three.

That being said, without a decent focal point of the attack, there's not much point in this approach.

I'd be more inclined to look at our pacier players in the wide positions. For me, our starting eleven should look something like this:

GK: Pickford
RB: Martina/ Coleman (when fit)
LB: Baines
CB: Keane
CB: Williams
DM: Schneiderlin
CM: Gueye
CM: Sigurdsson
RF: Lookman
LF: Sandro
CF: Rooney

That would mean pace in the wide areas with Sigurdsson dictating the play in the middle areas of the final third. It would also take away the necessity of the full backs getting forward and providing the width.

Changes could be made to go more attacking (Gueye off for Klaassen), or to play long to a target man (Rooney off for DCL).

All depends on Koeman having the balls to drop Rooney or Klaassen when needed.

I agree however, to me it's clear Ross' best position is as a box to box MF, picking the ball up deep and dribbling at a defense and playing on instinct rather than having to make the computer like decisions that a no 10 needs to do consistently. The problem is that role doesn't really exist for us when we play 2 holding midfielders, and it's very similar to what Davies (or even perhaps Klaassen) offers anyway. No I don't think Tom has more natural ability than Ross, but he's more consistent and clearly Koeman trusts him more than Ross, right or wrong.

Ross needs to be in a team that plays with 1 holding MF and he can operate going forward at pace with the ball. If he had the footballing brain of a Siggy or even a Davies, he'd be unstoppable.

The whole thing makes me sad. But ok that's football.
