What's the plan?

Good post mert.

Plus points of the current side:
- We're solid defensively
- Er...
- ....erm
- ....um.

Here's a fun article showing how by just about every single metric, we're big outliers as one of the worst attacking teams in the league, and our actual goals scored (which is still pretty crap) has been overperforming:

Here's the TL;DR graph at the end of it (all the metrics are explained in the article):

Note how well grouped the rest of the top 7 (apart from Chelsea) are, and also note just how HUGE outliers we are in terms of numbers rather than just position on the table. We are total turd right now to the point where if this doesn't change, Koeman will be gone before the end of the season. It might change, of course (it bloody better) - Sigurddsson, Vlasic, Sandro, Klaassen, Lookman could all start flying, and 3 games is a small sample size - but that's where we are right now. We're not doing 'okay' - we're DREADFUL.

Weeeeeeee

Edit: here's another simpler look at it:

In this case, 'good' chances means chances with a historical 8% or higher conversion rate

Hoofball.

Dutch David Moyes etc etc.

Nah but seriously our football is going to be turgid at best.

Our football at times last year was very good - when it clicked.

It's simply going to be a case of waiting for the side to bed in and click. Hard with so many new signings and injuries, but it'll come.

The first half vs Hajduk Split - we played some great stuff. Fast, incisive play and really we should have scored more.

Have patience before making a sweeping statement.

And we're three games in.

And two of those games were away against City and the current champions.

The other against a Stoke side well-drilled defensively and extremely hard to break down.

Also, we're clearly not dreadful.

Utter pony.

First day back in here today after taking a week off. Great for the head. Then read posts and realise some people have been in here since the window closed.

Great to be back. Doomed after 3 games in :)

Its amazing, when people use stats to show Everton or one of its players in a positve light everyone jumps on it and praises it.

When a stat is shown to show Everton or a player in a bad light its utter pony apparently.

Consistency people.

I'm just not sure why 7 games into a new season against a variety of opposition in terms of quality isn't sufficient time to get a rough idea about how thing will pan out.

We've played two good sides and been outplayed. 1 point from 6.

We've played one rank average side and matched them. Shaded it at one key moment. 3 points.

We've played four games against Championship (Split) and League One (Slovakian lads) level opposition. 3 wins one draw.

So we've proven marginally better than the rank average, mid table side and (currently) that's our level. Not sure why that's controversial

I was as disappointed as anyone after our performance against Chelsea.

But it hasn't been a poor start or dreadful. I believe @orly called it disjointed, which is the best way to describe it imo, but also completely expected given a) the amount of new additions, b) the amount of injuries and c) the games we've had.

The next two games are now about basically picking up points and then trying to find a system and get our groove after those.

Koeman needs to be probably a bit more forward thinking in his approach and less rigid with this silly back three formation, which without a naturally left-footed CB I just don't think we have the right personnel for at this time.

Yeah, defo, big caveats of small sample size, that's a given. But there are huge concerns, and they're big enough that it would be quite unusual for them to be overcome so much that we improve to the point of challenging for top 6, even taking into account quality of opposition and new players bedding in. Also, looking back at last season, the signs were there, they were just covered up by Lukaku really. The eye test supports the analysis too, for me anyway.

Still planting my flag in the "Koeman gone at season's end" corner.

So basically you're saying we beat the teams we should be beating and got a point against 2 teams that should not be beating. I'm glad you can see the positives.
