It's like a lot of companies have lost sight of two stark realities, a company needs to maximise profit, and advertising should be targeted at your customer base and certainly not alienate them.

Disney for example we t down a weird rabbit hole, making movies for audiences that simply don't exist - hence catastrophic returns at the box office - only when they ditched the 'message' and went back to making a movie aimed at the people who watch those movies did they find success (Latest Deadpool movie)..
Just off the top of my head a list of awful Disney decisions in the past few years.
Peter Pan, making casting an ethnic actor as Peter Pan, promoting Wendy to the main character - who essentially is the girl boss of the movie, the lost boys become the lost children etc (each narrative choice destroyed the actual essence and meaning of the original story)
Snow White, casting an ethnic actress as the main character - eliminating the low story as it was 'creepy stalking', turning the dwarves originally into the seven magical creatures (yeah because everyone always assumed the dwarves were not a fantasy creature but a human with dwarfism ofc...) also rammed this home in every sound bite out of the main actress.
Thor love and thunder - making his gf effectively the star of the movie who takes on his powers - ie a Thor movie without Thor as the main character.
The marvels, three female leads - female main villain, two of which can't act, girl boss movie on steroids.
Ant man - promoting his daughter as the main character - an ant man movie were again he's relegated to a support role needing saving by the girl boss.

Could list tons more but that's just a snapshot of one companies decisions to push forward a very specific agenda to the detriment of making good entertainment. And Disney have suffered huge financial damage from it.

Can throw in their butchering of the Star Wars IP, Indiana Jones IP, Amazon butchering the LoTR IP etc.

Bud Light was almost cat crash bad, a beer linked with frat boys, working class drinking places and tailgate parties, and they launched a huge campaign with the ad campaign centering on a trans guy drinking it in the bath in full make up, who on earth did they think these ads would appeal too and what did they think their existing customer bsse would react like to it?

Funny thing is this is the type of stuff that turns people against the very ideas they apparently want to push. Why because it's so blatant and almost like an indoctrination
But only fools find this stuff offensive!!

Dinosaur behaviour imo

THIS is what i'm trying to say - only better put by yourself.

That is not what I gleaned from your initial tone so, good to hear.

That's the thing about reading a post on the internet mate. You take it how you want to take it.

Like I say, i'm all for inclusion of minorities - but not to the detriment of other people. I'm sure we can agree on this.

These people are offended by everything but white straight men - remember the young black lad starring in the star wars film a few years ago - they were not happy!

Original star wars had Lando as a very important character, one of the three co-leads of the movie was Leah - a well written, well acted strong female character and arguably the heart of the movies.

Think the problem you'll find with the character of Finn was it was badly written and badly acted - the main issue was the lead character - who essentially was the prototype girl boss character - could do everything better than the male counterparts no weaknesses, the wrecking of legacy characters in order to promote her as this 'better' version.

I didn't really rate the prequels much but the sequel trilogy was god awful on every level. And yes a prime reason was it set out with an agenda instigated from Kathleen Kennedy and god be damned it was gonna drive that agenda home

Boyega got lots of abuse and there were calls to boycott his film.

Agreed about the sequel trilogy - I am a big fan of the 3 originals though

Depends though mate, when you're dealing with stuff like star wars, LoTR, Comic adaptations etc, you're in the realm of fandom, and they are passionate about it.

As I said I don't need a show coming out and blatantly trying to drive a message home and to do so tying it onto an already successful IP for example.

When it's done that way it can be offensive, because nobody likes to feel like they are being lectured too, especially so when the purpose is to switch off from real world stuff for a few hours.

Done right there's zero need to force in this stuff. Write a good movie or show and cat it well, it is that simple, not go into it with some checklist of preconceived things you want to drive home.

Take Peter Pan, the original story and early adaptations of it, the main hero IS already Wendy, is he a girl boss - no she doesn't have to be, she's the mature one amongst a sea of foolish boys, hell the lost boys entire reason for being boys only is because girls are too sensible to end up that way. Yeah Peter Pan saves her from Crook, but that's not putting down women as weak, because ultimately she saves them all on a completely higher level.

So Disney took the type of movie that has a great female character in it and spoilt her by some slavish 'the only strong female cannot need a man's help and do everything herself better'.

It's like Disney don't understand how to actually write female characters whatsoever to make them appear strong without simply giving them what you'd describe as masculine traits.

I feel the problem lies in a very simple thing as well, diversity is a great thing, BUT, diversity of thought, of character is being ignored over a surface level diversity - they may have a writer from every ethnic type and cover the spectrum of the rainbow but if they all think along the exact same lines - the diversity means zero.

I struggle to see detrement in inclusion unless you just get angry about everything.

For me it's about that key word detriment, do I object to seeing a trans person portrayed in a movie as a central character, or a female lead, or minority lead, person eithna disability etc, not at all if it fits the story and doesn't retract from it.

The last 3-5 years though has seen more and more occasions of it feeling forced into it.

Take the LoTR show, bought the IP, made it the most expensive show ever made, I know zero Tolkien fans who still watch the thing.

The trashed the world, trashed the professors lore all on order to make it reflect the modern world - why?
Are you seriously telling me that a Japanese guy can only identify with a story were he sees himself represented, same fur women or any other racial grouping etc.

On a personnel level I did find it offensive when you have middle earth now seeming to be filmed on location in New York or San Fran given the racial diversity displayed.

The marketing of the show doesn't hold back other on this being a driving force behind decisions, as the show creators were the ones constantly banging on about diversity. The first female black dwarf displayed on screen etc - why can't elves be Asian or Hispanic yada yada yada - the crowning piece was in one shot in Numeanor they have a lad as a warrior with downs Syndrome....

'The Unstereotype Alliance is a thought and action platform that seeks to eradicate harmful stereotypes in all media and advertising content.

Convened by UN Women, the United Nations entity for Gender Equality, the Unstereotype Alliance brings together partners and seeks to collectively use the advertising industry as a force for good to drive positive change all over the world.

The Alliance contributes to empowering people in all their diversity (race, class, age, ability, ethnicity, religion, sexuality, language, education, etc.) to help create an equal world.'

Sounds perfectly unbiased to me  There's a Mark Twain quote i'm thinking of...

Anheuser-Busch InBev (Budweiser), Target, Pfizer, AT&T & Disney are all down on average 16% - $80 billion in market value, Nike is trading 11.3% since the beginning of the year, 26.1% below last year (so bad they've let go of 1600 staff) "Nike boss John Donahoe has called the company’s downturn “a painful reality and not one that I take lightly.” “We are currently not performing at our best, and I ultimately hold myself and my leadership team accountable,” he said, leaving out any mention of the poor decisions that put Nike in this position in the first place."

Rip Curl & Dorito's even apologised for their adverts due to such backlash.
