What is the problem with this team?

Tosun as your only striker is a big problem. Opposition defences push up and know he ain't going to do anything to worry them unless he's in the box. Type of striker you bring on if you need a goal and have a team pinned back. Not what you need from the start, in the Premier League at least.

First of all, we don't play a high line.

Second of all, we have slow center backs thst cannot pass a ball or defend in space. The scheme depends on it.

Third of all, we have a LB afraid to go forward in a scheme that depends on it.

Fourth of all, we have no #8.

Pace pace pace.

We are easy to press because we lack pace of foot and mind. We struggle to press because we lack raw pace. Rennes were miles faster than us at both foot speed and passing speed.

If we had this, lacking pace of foot would be a secondary issue. I was watching through that twitter channel of old matches the other day, we never replaced Pienaar/Arteta and to a certain extent Osman type players, even Cahill's interplay was better than what we have now.

The current crop can't even string two passes together.

The problems in the team stem back to when we went 2 years without any transfer money. 2009 to be exact.

The attitude for years now of what we have is sufficient is why we sit here 24 years without a trophy. Noone bought from years ago have ever really been replaced. Baines is only just getting a replacement, jags is still our captain, Barkley was let go and no replacement has been made, Lukaku still not replaced realistically etc.

So it has developed partly towards a losing mentality. Because no matter who comes into the club , the same players are there in the dressing room and we are only losing them through age rather than any real need to replace them. When you look at the defensive options we have as of now, there is no urgency to change that. Between Williams Pennington jagiekla one of them or even 2 are going to be our defensive options this season. City went out and bought a whole new defence last year and despite our lack of their money, we haven't really bothered. One centre half and that's it.

I'm swaying off the point somewhat here. What is wrong with Everton is pretty much we haven't changed. We have stood still for 9 years now and made do with what we have. Are lewen Sandro niasse and tosun good enough for us? Not at all, but we will make do. Our centre halves are mostly keeping their place because we will make do, our midfielders of McCarthy besic schneiderlin will be here because we will make do. Until that changes , until we genuinely want to have a successful team then nothing will chsnge.

I'm not looking for us to sign another load of players this window, I'm talking about the past. We sign like 10 players or so last summer and sign one defender, 1! Martina doesn't count because he is as good as Brett angel was. That's case and point, we signed Keane only and made do with what we have. Where is Barkley's replacement ? I'm sure we will make do with gueye and schneiderlin .

If we presume that anyone connected with EFC understood that last season we are lacking in quality all over the pitch, then consider that 2 weeks before the start of the season, we have virtually the same team...that tells you everything you need to know about EFC

We have a team that has been in constant upheaval for the best part of 5 ,years players have been recruited and trained to suit a variety of different systems and roles , it's no wonder we look so disfunctional at times.
What we are desperately in need of is a period of stability.
I think that now Moshiri has installed his preferred management team , he will quite rightly support them through thick and thin regardless of how disgruntled we may get.
We may need a degree or patience and forbearance to negotiate the twists and turns of the coming season, in the hope that we may emerge from it stronger than we went in.

No winners, mentally fragile, happy to pick up a vast pay cheque whether playing or sitting on he bench.

This all stems from keeping too many players on the books for too long that are now the senior members of the team and are well past their prime.

Need to get back to a small tight knit squad. Need to ship out the old, cut the deadwood and only let the youngsters with a genuine future near the forst team. I know its harsh but the likes of Browning, Galloway, Pennington and others should have been cut loose years ago to forge careers, like the likes of Forshaw, lundstrum and Duffy.

Everton and transfer policy, both in and out, has been awful for a long time. The dying embers of Moyes team are still here and they're all way past their best.

To compound that we went and bought Ashley Williams and Michael Keane. Keane is awful ability wise and Williams I don't even want to write about. I couldn't believe it when we signed those two.

Koeman gave up, which is completely unacceptable professionally, but you could see he couldn't handle not having a replacement for Lukaku. I still believe Allardyce did incredibly well to get us clear of a relegation fight.b

If Silva doesn't see it already, the players are the critical issue. If Wolves is his wake up call, he may be another manager enjoying a nice payoff all too soon.
