What is the problem with this team?

The back line is too slow has been for some time now and to compensate, the need for two sitting/ defense midfielders. Priority should always build from the back. Left back and centre back should have been priority... But stiill time yet! And we look and behave like a club that panics and sacks.
You've hit the nail on the head defence is too slow and to protect them we go with 2 defensive mids but the problem with that is that they are too slow as well, which is why despite having 6 defensive players on the pitch we often let in 2-3 or more a game. Pace at the back solves our problims

The eternal optimist within just thinks/hopes that he'd do well if given an extended run of games, something that he hasn't yet had in a blue shirt despite his four year tenure at Everton. May just be clutching at straws though, who knows..

I know he doesn't fit the transfer model we have now adopted, but (29 y/o) Nzonzi seems to fit the bill through the middle, being capable of putting his foot in if needed, remarkably agile and quick for such a tall player, as well as possessing a fantastic touch and range of passing. He and Sigurdsson as an axis ahead of Gueye (needed solely to shield the defence) would possess a better balance than we currently have, in my opinion anyway.

N'Zonzi is looking for a better club than Everton, same as Mina really. We have no status just now. He's looking for the Arse, Barcelona,
wherever and he knows that he needs to be playing European Football because Deschamps will have him out of the French squad in a jiffy if he isn't. If you want to play for France you need to be playing for a top 4 club somewhere or other.

We pay average or unproven players a premium wage. Has caused a horrible lack of team spirit and love of our club.

No hunger or desire. Not Everton.

Say what you want about Barkley but why on earth did he want to leave and screw us over the way he did? He had an inside view on how many bells are in the dressing room?? Or those further up have no idea what they’re doing...
I doubt Barkley could recognise himself.

Was just a suggestion as to the type of player who could make the world of difference through the middle.
Loftus-Cheek and Doucouré are also often mentioned, but there seems to be rather slim pickings when it comes to well-rounded, box-to-box midfielders who fit both the age-range and price bracket in which we are looking.

If Silva was watching us last season then he must have known that Keane and Morgan simply aren’t to be relied upon. Have a feeling he’s thought that he could get by with them. He can’t.

Specifically on the inability to create chances: For a number of seasons this was a one man attack. If Lukaku was on song the goals came and games were won. But as a team, we were never a solid, well rounded unit. Always a gaping crack or two showing in the starting XI on match day.

Last summer was the big opportunity to build a stronger collective side, but as we all know Koeman and Walsh lacked any semblance of a plan both on the pitch and in the transfer market. What we did have was Rooney who in stages of the season made a passable impression of a talismanic goalscorer.

Now we have a manager who seems to have a clue about engineering a decent attack and manage a group of players, while also enjoying the buying power of the Moshiri era that enables not only identifying the need for a left winger but hiring the right guy to fill the spot. But so far in preseason it seems a bit like the players are still subconsciously looking for that signal from the main man to look for a penetrating move.

Bit of a cliche but I think the main thing we´re missing attacking-wise is belief in the collective strength of the team. That, and fitness levels that have looked suspect for a long time. Problem is we are utterly clueless at the back which makes it much harder to patiently build the feel good factor and find a new attacking identity.
Collective strength. Where is that then? They do not have the mentality to be strong.

Like Stuttgart?

Pickford, Coleman, Rich Kid, Walcott, Tosun (for now), Gana and Siggi maybe. Lookman if he's wanted ..

The rest, well who cares? If someone's coming in to do your job you down tools.. One bad apple and all that jazz..

The main problem is you’ve got a squad of players brought in or trained under too many different managers (Moyes, Martinez, Koeman, Allardyce, Unsworth, and now Silva) with too few of exceptional talent.

Most can fit a particular style or two, but the squad has neither been properly trained in any specific style nor does it know how to function in Silva’s system. And many have deficiencies that can be masked when surrounded by exceptionally talented players, but for the most part we’ve seen talent depart and replaced with average players.

We’ll see them playing better after the full squad has sufficient time to train, but they’re still largely average.
