Transfer Rumour Virgil van Dijk

We will see mate, if a bid gets to a certain amount for any of their players - i still belive they will sell.

They used to have the policy of turing down itnerest for a complete season after the initial approaches as well and get the player to stay for one more season with the assurance they can go the following season for the right amount - seen with Schneiderlin and a few others, but thats been done away with as well lately - Mane being the best example

I get a bid of 50m or thereabouts for him then he will be out the door

But if they get a 50million bid in january, im sure they are clever enough to know that bid will still be there in the summer, or higher even.
I just dont see southampton selling this month at all.
Its not the way they have worked in the past or how they will be looking to work in the future.
See us with stone and lukaku, we have been able to turn down all sorts of bids just on the basis we knew there value was not going decrease despite drop on form

Form could go to pot, could get a bad injury, or player could end up throwing his toys out the pram about not getting a move.

All thigns that could seriously effect his value mate, not saying they will sell, but i just don't see them as a club, with the owner they have, turning down a world record fee for a defender for example, especially if they are able to 'replace' him during the same window.

The not being able to repalce angle may explain why they normally stick to the sumemr and let them go, Sakho is a ready made replacement available now for example

I want us to make a big signing. Our Robinho moment - sign someone that everyone else thought was completely out of our reach and make the media take note and say "Wow! How did they pull that off, they must be serious".

I think the Chris Brunt shout was a wind up mate...hard to take but we haven't hit that height yet despite all our new found cash. Maybe next year assuming WBA somehow conspire to miss out on the Champions League

I would say he is the BEST in the league. Strong, quick, great in the air, good with the ball at his (both) feet, can comfortably bring the ball out of defense, excellent recovery and can pop up with a goal or two. Personally I don't think he has a weak attribute but that's just my opinion.

Considering we got just short of 50M for Stones, IF we did get him then your basically swapping Stones for VVD, (which in theory doesn't effect our original transfer budget), and I know which player I would rather have.
I'm reluctant to say that he's the best yet, however I've become a big admirer of van Dijk and I certainly think he potentially could be the best.

As you mention, he's got everything you'd want from a centre half with a mixture of the modern defender and the traditions that we all desire.

He's tall, strong, quick and not afraid to put a hefty tackle in or use his strength to win the ball either on the deck or in the air - a defender of old.

Yet he's also very comfortable on the ball and can contribute to a team's play, so it's taking Stones and adding those resolute defensive traits.

It's a lot of money and I know he's not the flamboyant, flair name that people may desire but it would certainly show that we're on the up.

Haha haha

Professional forumite asks someone else to prove their worth. On the internet. To nobodies.

Lol.

Just lol.

Oh dear Simon, you are much too vulnerable here
Oh, the guy who told you was told by an ex united player. I apologise. You're just passing on info from a supposed itk that's come from a supposed itk.

idk.

Don't you get it??? My initial point was that you claimed to know info through contacts, then stated that you're 'not an ITK.'

And here you are still claiming to' hear things.'

That's what a ITK (in the know) is.

That's what you're claiming to be.

I'm not disputing that your info might be genuine, rather your contradiction in offering up ITK info then immediately denying being ITK.

Here's you asking someone to, ahem, "prove their worth " in your usual angry words.

Come on Simon, it's Apology Saturday, you can do it

I'm a long time admirer of Van Dijk, but I dont think he's a complete player. For me his weakness is being out of position a lot. Now that might be down to having the responsibility at S'ton to do almost everything himself. But the work of players around him like Fonte who cover goes largely unacknowledged. He (VVD) also does a lot of great recovery tackles and that catches the eye - but that in itself is a result of wandering too far up the pitch to start and finish moves off. That's a price he pays for being spread too thin, but obviously he pulls it all together most of the time and looks like a superman.

I do agree with JLW though: I think he is the best all round defender in the PL even now.

Hindsight, but we had the chance when Chelsea were after Stones and Martinez identified VVD, at the time I was happy to see us hang onto Stones and presumably so was Roberto with the promise that he could move on a season later. If the figures quoted are accurate I would rather we spent on a good stopper and a striker, put the pressure on Walsh to find the next VVD.

I agree Dave, I am not saying he is perfect or complete and he can improve, but i dont think he has a weakness in his game. With the Stones money it would deffo be worth a substantial bid its probably not going to come off, but I think our only chance (and it is a small chance) to get him is this window, if we wait for the summer and he continues to impress I can see one of the elite clubs getting him and I don't mean just in our league.

Think that's spot on analysis there, Dave.
