Villa are a big club no doubt but bigger than us? No, I really just think that beaver headed cretin is just kissing two of his ex clubs arses at the same time, I'm sure he gets bits of work in lounges etc

Never get the obsession with these "Big Club" things.

There are probably more "Big Clubs" in the Championship and League 1 than there are in the PL at the moment.

Not sure if Bournemouth are arsed that they are not as "Big" as either Sheffield clubs, Wolves, Forest, Leeds, etc etc etc.
Of course they're not arsed because they're not big clubs. For them to be arsed would be pointless, but I bet Bournemouth and Southampton fans have debates over who are bigger.

Major I would class as League cup, FA cup, League Title and European trophies ( No intertoto crap etc )

I'd class European trophy way higher than League title, that's the pinnacle of club football.
That's fine, but are you say the league cup and the league are similar standard of major?

But its pointless anyrate. Why folk feel the need to grade a cup or a league or a European win to prove their car is better just seems utterly daft to me.

"Big" clubs, with few exceptions, tend to be located in Cities with the largest population. Thats sort of it.

Both Chelsea and villa have won more trophies and a Europe cup each. Sunderland are not far off on trophy haul and have a bigger fanbase
No Sunderland don't, as seen on Saturday, only lower section taken in a relegation battle is pathetic. Chelsea have been champions of England 5 times no way does that make them bigger than us. Without the cash injection they'd be stuck on 1 title, but still 5 it is. Villa are the biggest of those three and very close to us.

Although I don't like their fans and was delighted they went down, considering the whole of English Football history up to the present day, Villa are probably the club most similar to us. We are both similar sized but we are a bit ahead of them. The gap in size between us and Villa is probably quite similar to the gap between Arsenal and ourselves before Wenger arrived. At that point Arsenal were on 10 titles to our 9, but had won a couple of league titles, an FA Cup, and a Cup Winners Cup recently, just as we had not long before.

We are similar to Villa in a lot of ways, but there are a few important points to the argument when considering who is bigger...

Their European Cup win sways it in their favour but I think people give it too much weight. Of course it was a fantastic and quite rare achievement (seeing as though only 5 English clubs have managed it), but it is still a Cup competition. For me a league title is the most superior trophy a team can win as it is earned after a whole season. You can't win a league title without being the best team during that season, but you can win any cup competition even if you're not the best team.

Then, although you can't discount trophies just because they were won a long time ago, you do have to consider how long ago the vast majority of Villa's success was. In the last 100 years they have won the title once, to our 7. In the last 50 years, they haven't even won an FA Cup, and apart from 1980-1982 when they were at their peak, they've relied on League Cup wins which cannot possibly be given the same prestige as a league title win.

Finally, forgetting any of the past, and looking at the present, they have now slipped in to irrelevant territory with no sign of getting back up any time soon.

Their sole European Cup win is the only thing that keeps them close to us at the present time, and if they are marked ahead of us for that feat, then it means them and Forest are bigger than everyone bar Chelsea, the RS and United. Total trophies won is not a fair indicator as I would put an FA Cup win at about 1/4 of the achievement of a title win, and a League Cup at about 1/5 of a League title win, if that.

Each to their own. I use our fantastic history to pipe down any know nothing fans trying to belittle my club because they read and listen to modern day media who would have us believe City are a superior club. Spurs too.

If you can't boast about what you've won then what's the point.
