VAR - the death of football (as I know it)

Further to my original view the kopites did suggest another use for var .

More favouritism for the big clubs . If it's down to the ref then potentially like a large part of the cup game, the decisions in favour the big teams. So use it to rule goals out against them, penalty claims etc but ref positive about decisions that don't benefit them.

I tell thee if VAR was around in 66 it would have saved the country years of misplaced 'big time' posturing as world cup winners. It would also have prevented that hideoes lightening seeds / Baddeil and Skinner song in Euro 96. Many years of hurt just wouldn't sound the same...

Agree that goal was never over the line.... but the only reason that game went to extra time anyway was because the Germans got a dodgy free kick just before full time which they equalized from.

I say do away with VAR and appoint 2 Russian linesman at every game.

Teething issues

It's still definitely a good idea

As I previously mentioned in this thread, penalty decisions will still remain contentious as they come down to opinion

The offside decision was spot on, and things like that are what it's needed for

Imagine if we'd had it against Spurs and Rooney's goal had been allowed?

We'd have gotten pumped 4-1.

I only watched the BBC FA Cup highlights and the way it was implemented in the Liverpool West Brom game was very bad. Particularly the way the ref has to watch and rewatch it over to make a decision.

I think it would be fine to use it for goal line decisions, but for everything else just go with the ref. The refs these days are actually getting better. We used to get a LOT of unbelievable decisions, but they're a lot less these days.

If they use VAR i think they should allow a 4th official to recommend something based on the video, but I don't think the ref on the pitch needs to review it himself.

Yes.....I thought the idea was for a fellow in a gantry to look at a screen and infirm the ref he had got it wrong.

I never thought the ref himself went over and reviewed his decision.

Football should stick to goal line technology and that’s it.

VAR is just adding more complication and controversy. Let’s just accept that a human ref has the final say on decisions, based on his real time view.

Football isn’t a technical sport. It’s a simple one, and any introduction of technology should be barely noticeable. This is having too big an impact on the personality of the game.

I totally agree.

I watched the rugby yesterday and that waiting and waiting to see if a try is allowed or not really is a buzz killer IMO
