Reading on the Guardian live feed that the Russians are now in control of Lughansk after taking Lysychansk.

Also watched the Lord Dannatt interview saying he thinks the conflict will freeze and negotiations can start. Hopefully if that's the case, the loss of life will stop.

think they will have another go at Odessa and Kharkiv

IDK Europe realizes that if the republicians take the house of representatives (especially the house) or get say 53 senators then US financial support goes into the toliet. The republicians didn't have the votes to stop Biden's bill so some of them voted for it. However if they regain enough power to block something they'll all vote as a party. And if they get the presidency in 24 then the balkans are screwed. They already pro-russia you trust that these people gonna honor a mutual defense treaty? yea, no.

So anyway, my point is, if Ukraine's sovergienty really matters to Europe, you might either want to really step up while US support exists or have a plan B.

If (when) that happens, the focus of the EU (or rather the European NATO states, including us) really needs to be on its own defences. We need to have an effective, well-equipped and well supplied army of at least 300,000 - 500,000 deployables ready by 2025. Helping Ukraine would be a bonus.

By we do you mean the U.K. or are you referring to NATO?

I thought supporting Ukraine was something that Democrats and Republicans were both in favor off. Only the extremes of both party voted against it.

I have a hard time seeing how this ends well for Ukraine in the short term.

Despite the massive help (1/3 of the US stock of anti-tank weapons for instance) they don't seem to register any gains. Now attention turns to the Donbass region. If it goes like it has been going for the last months, he'll have another crack at Odessa or Kharkiv in september.

Putin will only come to the table when the offensive is halted. For the moment, that's not happening.

Meanwhile Ukraine fatigue is setting in. How long is the west prepared to pay 155 euro per MWh of gas?

If they have the votes to block it, they will under the guise of fiscal responsibility or something. It was easier to vote for support in the early days because they lacked the votes and to avoid questions but Fox/newsmax/own/facebook has now had ample time to get the pro-russia misinformation campaign more mobilized. Also the house is all extreme right.

When/if the republicians take over and russia enters the balkans it doesn't mean we are leaving nato but we aren't gonna lift a finger.

yes to both (the European parts of NATO include the UK)
I think the figures you quote for a U.K. standing army of between 300-500k is a fantasy figure - only under full mobilisation (conscription) could we hope to achieve those levels.

I’d say 200K is the realistic figure we should be looking at. Even that figure would take years of reform and restructure to achieve.
