no idea why this has started so late? an enclave in a nato area, they should long be starved to death. (well not going that far, since RU would have crumbled and caved in when it comes to other actions of its) should stay in place till they withdraw from UKR
You're cheering but this is the sort of thing that gets the gas shut off in Europe.

Transportation from Russia to Kaliningrad will take place via the Baltic and this will have some buggeration value only, but it's not de-escalating matters or helping at all. It doesn't stop Russia's invasion in Ukraine one bit.

I disagree, but there we are.

The USSR and USA were negotiating during that crisis; the USA and Russia are not doing that now at any sort of meaningful level. The USSR and USA also had clear strategic goals and were both willing to compromise, that doesn't seem to be the case now.

Exactly, it is increasingly likely this is just gesture politics - and gesture politics by one very small country at that. It is insane that this is allowed to happen, that they can (apparently) send a message to the rest of Europe that they are doing this and they will not respond to a negotiated compromise.

Gas will be a bit more pricey so what? Better than more lives being lost

I think blockade of Kaliningrad should continue till they withdraw their forces from foreign lands they invaded

Or we could just find that gas is far more expensive, to the extent that firms go bust and people can't afford it, and even more lives are lost.

I think if the blockade of Kaliningrad is going to take place it should only ever have been a decision of all NATO / the EU. The same goes for all the other nonsense gestures that have masqueraded as policy during this crisis.

Meh. Europe would never starve.

More lives will be due to the price going up. It will be potentially more devastating than covid if they shut the supply completely.

Think EU agreed on buying the gas together for the block. They will be fine come this winter.

I hope not. But it's economy will tank. People will be hard pressed to pay their utilities and the weakest and most vulnerable will suffer. We are also likely to see more extremist politics taking place and the EU falling over - France almost just voted in the equivalent of the National Front for God's sake.

There's unity and a sensible unified stance against the invasion, but this is dumbass points scoring that increases tensions.

That you've added "Europe" as a qualifier there says everything.

The EU (and NATO fwiw) will only ever work if it acts collectively, especially in crises. This sort of thing (if it is true, as it appears to be, that they've done this unilaterally) cannot ever be allowed to happen, it is a fundamental weakness that could (and will) easily be used to split the unity of the bloc apart. Countries would accept a gas cutoff if it came from the EU and Russia properly falling out; I doubt they would accept a cutoff because Lithuania unilaterally acted and then told everyone else to STFU when negotiations produced a compromise outcome.

Thing is due to sanctions Russia will not be able to charter any of the big global shipping companies (Maersk for example). This will force Ru to re-purpose internal shipping assets so yeah this will cause some major headaches to Russia but not the end of the world. Stuff will still get to Kaliningrad eventually.

Yes, through a corridor enforced by the ru army perhaps.
