Independent article today, that according to intelligence report that was leaked to them, Ukrainians are outgunned 40 to 1 in artillery and situation is quite beak on frontlines. https://www.independent.co.uk/news/...telligence-russia-kyiv-military-b2096715.html

Hard to get accurate grasp on real situation, following war on r/Ukraine on Reddit, its mostly cheerleading forum, where pretty much only positive stuff get upvoted, Twitter on other hand, so much propaganda and disinformation to comb through. But it seems its slaughterhouse out there, horrible losses by both side

The only thing I can believe is that there's a lot of disinformation about Ukraine.

Ukraine doesn't allow dual nationality as far as I know.
Ah I might have been wrong about that bit. All of them have lived in Ukraine for years though and are members of the Ukrainian military, not fighting for the Foreign Legion.

Sounds reasonable - the Soviet Army was always artillery-heavy, the advance has been slow (so always within gun range) and they had a month or two to stockpile loads of ammunition.

To be honest my wife's friend was Ukrainian and had to first get Russian citizenship before she could get dual nationality with the UK. P

The research (Google) shows that foreign nationals could join the regular army so I presume that is the case here. So I have some confidence that they should be considered legitimately as soldiers and treated accordingly.

I don't see a death penalty being carried out though. Some PR and bargaining to be done by Russia over this.

It’s okay having loads of arty but you can’t capture and hold ground with it, at some point infantry need to advance and capture territory. That’s were the ukes counter - they withdraw during barrages then advance and engage Ru infantry at close quarters. This means that during this close combat Ru cannot use its arty and CAS, so they immediately lose their advantage.

These tactics are working (just) for the ukes but Russia just keeps feeding more troops into the mincer.

Give it a week or so and the Uke MLRS will be in the AO along with their grey eagle drones - they then have a chance to mallet the Ru arty.

I don't think few dozens howitzers and MLRS gonna change incredible quantity advantage Russians have, not to mention they gonna target those weapons with air and missile strikes as priority targets, as they already doing, yesterday video posted on twitter of destruction of Norwegian donated howitzers.

This whole talk about wonder weapons in small quantities to counter Russians reminds me of German "Wunderwaffe" from ww2, Tigers, Panthers, Me-262, 88mm guns etc...... that despite quality advantage and destroying huge numbers of Russian armor and troops, simply couldn't stem the tide and incredible numerical advantage.

Their hope is to bloody Russians as much as they can, but any counter-offensive to retake lost territories, i simply don't see how, beside total Russian collapse.

But yeah, as you say, pulling Russians into urban combat where their artillery and air advantage cannot come in play, is best what Ukrainians can do, though no doubt it cost them massively too, Zelensky said few days ago, that every day Ukrainians lose 100 dead and around 550-600 wounded.

You’d be surprised at the capabilities of HIMARS and M270 systems - they are a real force multiplier.

Essentially Russian arty requires targets to be acquired by fire-control radar and then the target solutions have to be manually worked out by a fire control officer before the numbers are fed into the targeting system - only then can they fire. Effectively each battery can launch 1 salvo per hour (including reload times) and is notoriously inaccurate.

The HIMARS and M270 rely on GPS targeting - so you stick a drone up with an encrypted data-link. It sees a target and sends the gps co-ords directly to the missile guidance heads via the data link.

Press the button and away you go - extremely accurate and you can fire 5 salvos per hour including automatic reloads. The systems then scoot to new positions to avoid counter-battery fire and go again.

Yes they are susceptible to air attack so they will be deployed with AD support.

Also their range is upto 60 miles - way further than any Russian arty system. So in short a real force multiplier. Granted they need more of these and they will get them.

As for the 155mm NATO arty systems they are getting shed loads of these from Canada/U.K./US/Holland/France and also Australia.

Don’t forget that Ukraine is fully mobilised they are continually training recruits, equipping them with Western weapons and sending them into battle. Whilst Russia has not fully mobilised (yet) and is thought to have approx 100k troops left. It is a war of attrition and I reckon the next month will see the ukes start to finally get a grip on things.

A great insight. Thanks
