I think hes looking at looking at developing a de facto Russia in east Ukraine. The Donbas, Crimea and in between, it’s why they are destroying Mariool. Once he has a foothold there, he has direct land access to the rest of Ukraine from Russia and also re supply, while also controlling the eastern part of the Black Sea.

Which almost certainly means Finland is coming along for the ride. Having every other country bordering the Baltic hostile is a disaster for Putin. Trading the Baltic Sea for dominance of the Black is not a good trade, and that's Putin's best-case outcome now.
