What with the north coast looking like it's opening up, it's a short term gamble. He's in no different position with regards to the Baltic in reality. I think you're grasping for a detriment to Russia that's not there.

It would diminish his sphere of influence or potential influence. He is effectively pulling his supposed fears closer.

Because Finland were always waiting to embrace their eastern neighbour? The Baltic states have been distrustful of Russian influence for a long time. I don't think Putin has even Nyarko levels of be-arse for them.

Russia have shot themselves in the foot with European relations but I don't think anyone else in the world is that worried. Europe has given lip service to conflicts elsewhere in the world and we shouldn't be surprised that it doesn't bother them if bad things are happening here now.

If Putin wants NATO out of Europe then forcing greater NATO integration into Europe is a strategic foot in the mouth, it would seem.
