Boris's logic is that we cant go all in on sanctions now, otherwise there will be nothing left in the economic armoury to either deter, or react to a the full scale invasion which is still strongly suspected. Sounds rational tbh.
Honestly dont think Putin gives a toss about sanctions. I think he is now of the opinion he has held off for too long.Boris's logic is that we cant go all in on sanctions now, otherwise there will be nothing left in the economic armoury to either deter, or react to a the full scale invasion which is still strongly suspected. I don't get it really. Pretty much Putin's whole schtick is that Russia is mighty and powerful and the west is weak and decadent. This episode merely confirms this image, and yet we expect him to back down because of it.Day 1 - We will come down like a steel trap on Putin
Day 2- We will impose sanctions...like humongous sanctions... herculean sanctions
Day 3 - we will impose a few sanctions
Day 4 - we will lie about who we have sanctioned.
At the rate the PM is going, by the end of the week we might have a military alliance with Russia.
Exactly. It’ll be tiered based on how the crisis escalates because say, the Russians fell back today, would the sanctions be removed?May well be the case mate. In which case it would be incidental which sanctions are or aren't brought in either today or later. But in terms of politics, if BoJo went for the full package now, then how should we react if/when Vlad goes for Kiev?
Given what we know of the wests reaction so far, they will probably withdraw NATO troops from Poland for fear of an invasionMay well be the case mate. Again, no chance. The US are already selling 250+ top notch M1A2 Abrams to the Poles, which is pretty unique as most exports are M1A1.Given what we know of the wests reaction so far, they will probably withdraw NATO troops from Poland for fear of an invasion
we have absolutely no evidence that the west would actually fight for 'any' NATO member - because its never happened in history, and we can see how they have scrambled around avoiding getting involved in the Ukraine for years for fear of conflict.Again, no chance. A lot of fantasy-scenario's on here.I hope peace comes to Ukraine shortly. If this becomes a war with troops on the ground fighting then I hope the US and UK ask the Saudi’s to open the oil taps fully and nose dive oil prices to below the cost of what Russia can produce it for. It’s happened before which hurt their economy shortly before the collapse of the USSR, it can happen again.
I dont count counter-terrorismer - it has happened, after 9/11
That's because it was America that was "under attack" though. Contrast that with Gingrich's remarks from a few years ago questioning whether America would go to war to protect [Estonia] a country that is basically the suburbs of St Petersburg. Since Suez, I can't imagine any European armed force doing anything if America isn't bothered.er - it has happened, after 9/11
