But that's most political alliances. All are grubby. I guess it all comes down to which version of the world you feel most comfortable with or in.

Of course hypocrisy is a thing. I try not to be hypocritical in my day to day life but ill be honest I find myself being. I do it subconsciously. On the little things. Everyone does. But I always try to correct it in moments of clarity. Think its a human condition to kinda sound out about things you should be doing in a different direction. And it's done subconsciously because you wouldn't do it if you had full clarity of it.

what’s the point of NATO?

It's a defensive pact between western nations- came about after WW2 with the onset of the cold war.

However, it's come to involve countries that the USA, UK arguably wouldn't protect. I.e those right next to Russia.

NATO approved in principle Ukraine joining in 2014; Russia invaded Crimea shortly afterwards.

Membership also deemed ( by some inc Russia, China, and no doubt some in the West ) to be part of the western liberal democratic ideal, protecting as it does fledgling European democracies against Totalitarian neighbours.
