AWACs are converted 747s ( I think) fitted out with massive radar and command / control systems. Like an air traffic control tower in the sky. The have no weapons and no offensive capabilities.

There's a page or two in Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising" where, during a large-scale air combat, a NATO awac radar tech realises there's a handful of Russia interceptors heading directly for his plane... A hairy situation ensues.

So the reported Russian infringements into Swedish and Romanian airspace are probably to disturb the AWAC? so they have to move it out of range? Or does it fly higher than the fighters range?

No that’ll just be Russia checking out operational response of nato. Russian jets will be picked up by the AWAC’s radar system hundreds of miles out - they then vector in fighters who are flying combat air patrols in the area. They then escort the Russians out of the airspace. The Russians will never get anywhere near an AWAC, they are the most protected aircraft in the sky.
