Honestly I’d be amazed and appalled if we had any boots on the ground over there; they’d be completely unsupported and when some got captured / killed there would be such a risk of a war between us and them. I mean what would we be asking them to do?

I guess it depends on your definition of 'special forces' - I'll admit to mine being quite a loose definition - in so much as I mean people there to gather intelligence.

I know nothing about this but surely they don’t have a case with a big red button in it with launch written on it. It must be quite a process to actually launch a nuke. Maybe Putin gives the order but then there must be numerous people who need to set the whole process off??
Maybe, if it came to it, one of those people could say sod it I am not firing ?

No offence mate but there is not a chance that launch codes are kept in a briefcase. This isn’t James Bond.

WaPo and numerous other sources have reported that the war plans and authentication codes are inside the president's briefcase in the US. I don't know how they do things in Russia, since I would assume you can be shot for questioning if Fearless Leader is in fact Fearless Leader, but around here the president is expected to confirm his identity to NORAD before launching a strike. This is why the briefcase is with him at all times, since he could be looking at minutes to respond in the event of an SLBM strike fired from off the East Coast.

It's a very worrying aspect of Ukraine. Whatever the outcome of all this, it will need addressing. But first let's hope Russia gets the hell out.

I'm sure - I guess a lot of it would depend on how they're deployed. It would be absurd to assume the US/UK aren't very active in intelligence gathering in the area - but I'll hold my hands up and say I haven't the faintest idea how we're achieving that.
