This is why people are annoyed at this slow response, purely because of money in the end, costing the lives of people.

You know there's a dictator preparing an attack at the door, saying "nah but he won't though, he promised" smells of gain-based interest.
I broadly agree - Ukraine has been failed by the West. Not because we haven't intervened militarily now - it's far too late and would result in a world war - but because we didn't give them the protection they asked for earlier.

I'm afraid the economic sanctions, coupled with the rhetoric, may be enough to ensure that happens regardless.

Putin clearly sees the economic sanctions alone as an act of war.

Exactly, and that's annoying and bad for obvious reasons, but it also gave Russia the confidence to think they're way too important and big, as basically by not helping Ukraine, the west/EU just went "we're here for the money, NATO is just a vehicle to secure funding".
