It is a terrible idea. Firstly, why on earth are they making a song and dance about authorising this? Doing that inevitably results in a perception that they are authorising the strikes themselves. Secondly, what are they going to do when one of these missiles takes out a school, a hospital, a train full of civilians etc?

Ukraine has a missile production capacity and is capable of striking the deep rear within Russia with drones and the systems it already has.
It is as you say now a political/election issue. Long overdue and needs to be resolved.

Personally I think it’s the right decision and should have been made a long time ago.

They gave Ukraine ATACM’s and then told them they couldn’t use them against Russian territory. So there’s Ukraine sitting on a stockpile of precision LR missiles whilst Russia launches wave after wave of LR strikes against them.

If those "wunderwaffe" missile were capable to interrupt supply line anywhere then they would do it long time ago with Crimea. You do know permission to strike Crimea and Donbass/Luhansk is already in effect for a almost a year? Last time i checked it stopped feck all.

It gonna give some headache to Russians where they gonna move their airplanes little bit back and thats gonna be it, as US minister of defense Austen said last week, Russians already moved 80% of their fighters out of range and its not gonna turn the tide (his exact quote).

People love to jerk off about wonder weapons (Leopards, Abrams, f16s come to mind) but reality is this war gonna be won or lost by old fashion attrition.
Sad but true.

Is there a “stockpile” of these things, though? As in ready to go in the sort of numbers that would make a significant difference to the war?

Both sorts of missiles are heavily used already, and the ones we are talking about have a relatively limited range (at least in terms of the size of Russia). One has to assume that those targets that can be assessed as at risk are already identified by the Russians and measures taken to protect or move them, given the extensive telegraphing of this decision.

Our governments are risking a ridiculous amount and probably in order to make a token gesture, if this is what it is. Personally I very much hope this is decoy chat because it is moronic otherwise.

If we’re going to make decisions like this, then as I have said since this war started government needs to make preparations for the potential outcomes and there has to be a significant effect for what they want to do. There has to be clear evidence that we - NATO - are prepared to be capable of responding to them. I am not sure that we ever have shown anything like that, at any point in the crisis. How much has our defence budget increased again? How many more troops, tanks and aircraft do we have? How larger are our defence stockpiles and industrial base?

It is tokenism. Ukraine is on the point of a collapse in the Donbass and Kursk and this will not turn the tide. I presume that they may be used to enforce any peace deal if NATO are forbidden from supporting it if any deal is made.

If there is no deal then it means that Russia is intending to carry on west and then they certainly will be used.

Maybe, but some of the reporting leans strongly towards daft tokenism:

I do hope that you are right though.
