Yet the Ukrainian military has only yielded ground grudgingly, and it has preserved and reconstituted its military forces while imposing massive casualties on the attacking Russians. The brutal calculus of the past six months is this: Russia has suffered over 180,000 casualties for the gain of just over 510 square kilometres. Think about that for a minute. It’s like a statistic from WWI.

Yes Ukraine’s 2023 offensive failed, but so too has Russia’s 2024 offensive. Both sides will now be planning their winter strategies only this time Ukraine is in a much healthier state than Russia. However I do concede that the second coming of Trump could throw another major spanner in the works but we’ll have to wait and see on that one.
The Russian pushes in the East and North appear to be continuing. Most military experts don't believe the casualties reported by either side. You appear to struggle with the idea that Putin actually cares about the number of deaths,as if that would deter him. The idea it's a war of attrition like WW1 was made over a year ago,but yet on it goes.

I don’t struggle with any ideas. So Russia pushes - they gain a few hundred metres and lose 100’s of troops in the process. Then Ukraine counter-attacks and they retreat. These losses are unsustainable over the long-term and they have completely failed in their summer offensive.

Looking at real-time data, at the end of June, Russia occupied just 17.57% of Ukraine. That figure includes Crimea and areas of Luhansk and Donetsk already occupied before 2022. That represents a net overall gain in territory of 50km square. Given that Russia has been “advancing” for the last 8 months.

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

In order to achieve this wonderful, strategic victory they’ve lost in the region of 700K dead and seriously injured.

Way to go Russia!!!!

Oh he cares not a jot.

Whatever happens now, I really can't see the west ever welcoming Putin back to the fold now. Whoever comes next after him won't be connected to the war in Ukraine and allow a reset sooner rather than later.
Unfortunately if it's Medvedev he could be worse.

Work with a lady who was transferred from Kiev when the war broke out. She called earlier about something work related and said she’d had had some bad news from Ukraine so was finding it hard to concentrate.

I didn’t ask to elaborate. Sounded pretty grim. Imagine trying to work or just live a normal life with that level of stress and sadness. Horrible.

Unfortunately, he's also a drunkard...so, yeah, could be very much worse
I'm convinced he's just a gobshite who is used to see what outrageous nonsense the government can get away with or at least plant the seed of whatever unpalatable things that are in the offing so that they are not a total surprise.

He was only president whilst they changed the rules to let Putin back in as he is in reality a toothless dog who wouldn't cause an issue when Putin retook the reigns officially.

If someone wanted to take over from Putin, then they would probably have to be a bigger bar steward than Putin and his cronies. It could definitely be worse. However it would probably require someone with FSB and military backing so at best with regards to Ukraine, so they'd not deem handing back Crimea as acceptable and Lughansk and Donetsk could possibly be "independent" states. Maybe the best we could hope for is someone who it's more acceptable to do a deal with.

Hmm, but finding that 'someone' is going to be the problem.

Ultimately, Russia is a corrupt society and the solution in my opinion lies with the oligarchs who have been heavily sanctioned since 2022. I'm sure most yearn for the days when they could come and go as they pleased and to spend their billions wherever and on whatever they wanted. If they can be persuaded by Western governments - perhaps using some leverage akin to returning to them some of their sanctioned 'interests' - to exert their undoubted influence over the choice of Putin's replacement and actively help in changing the existing political status quo that would be a major start. For now though they are persona non grata and probably in fear of their lives from Putin and his cronies as they have seen what happens to even those closest to him...'cup of tea comrade? Have you seen the view from the top floor?'
