Russia not delivering gas gonna create chaos all over Eastern and Central Europe and Italy too.

People are already pissed here because of prices rise

They are, but they’ve got a clear reason why it would be happening and amongst the people there is overwhelming support for Ukraine across Europe.

Whilst the energy dispute is seen as their contribution to the fight vs Putin (as a consequence of effective sanctions) people here and in Europe will accept it. As we saw with COVID here it’s probably only the elites cheating that would break that solidarity, which sadly is possible.

It's a massive move. All payments between Russia and the EU will be impossible, Europe will default on their debts and Russia will not pay theirs. This will inevitably end with Russia stopping the delivery of natural gas... At least that's how I understand it from newspapers.

If the war drags on for months, Putin might just run out of funds.
It’s well reported that he’s stashed away billions in preparation for sanctions. Will it be enough, perhaps not if their economy starts to break up due to the removal from SWIFT.

The long term concern is that they’ll now move to the Chinese alternative, but that’s an issue to be worried about later on.

Absolutely, but it will cripple Russia too.

Maybe, just maybe, the people of Europe will be prepared to endure the pain if it results in fascism once again being driven from Europe.
We'll see i guess, but something tells me Russians not gonna back down, especially not someone like Putin

I read some of comments on popular Russian social media site Pikabu (their reddit) with Google Chrome translator, majority seems in favor of war and talking about hypocrisy of the west, basically "us vs them" mentality

I also read they created an institutionalised an alternative to Swift to do business with other non European partners.
It's going to be bad. I'm irrationally hoping for peace as I just paid almost 100 quid for a full tank.

Russia relies on Europe to export its gas. Although there is a Russian-China pipeline, it gives less than 10% of what they export to the EU each of year. Can they afford to cut it off in the long term?

If it happens, which is still unlikely, it’s going to hurt them at least as much as us. Can Putin withstand this?

Also, Russia has been buying lots of gold over the past ten years

I suspect that’s the Chinese alternative, but I could easily be wrong. They mentioned on 5Live yesterday than there’s a number of EU banks that use it alongside SWIFT.

Still, regardless of the pitfalls and perhaps ways around it, it’s a message from the west based on solidarity, which has to be a positive.
