Like the Vatican, Russia thinks in centuries, I suspect. What's happening now is very very dissimilar to the Great Game of the 19th century, is it? Change a few surnames and exact theatre of operations. (I'm not, by the way, suggesting history shouts instructions but it does, I think, whisper warnings.)

There isn't a doubt in my mind that the plan is to restore Russia's previous European sphere of influence for reasons, I know, you'll understand. They don't necessarily need boots on the ground to accomplish that.

I think you underestimate China in that. Just as the US pull the strings of NATO,China are calling the shots for BRICS. Russia can't carry on this war without Chinese backing.

I agree with most of this. Wouldn't want to dispute it. But the elephant in the room is that their unequal relationship, propping up Putin and exerting some influence (I've no idea how much tbh) doesn't deter Putin from his pursuit of continuing power and what I do beieve, what he sees as almost the divine right of Russia - hegemon in east and central Europe.
