There is an extremely strong argument that Northern Ireland should be handed back to Ireland tomorrow

It most certainly will happen when there's a consensus in NI.

It can't be handed back there needs to be a poll in both the North and South, in accordance to the good Friday agreement.
This will happen within the next 10 years most likley near the end of this time frame..
Also it will be a free democratic vote and not a farce where the polling card comes pre filled in for you.

The logical reasons are multiple but the thing that seals it for me is the presence of a large group of people in the Donbas who have suffered from constant abuse and demonisation by the Kiev regime for 10 years because they are Russian , they speak Russian and wish to be part of Russia.

Any withdrawal of Russian forces will not stop these poor peoples cry for help. It must be resolved and the rightful integration of these areas into the Russian Federation makes backtracking on Russias part near impossible.

The wall of silence around this issue in the west is so great that even regular posters here claimed to have no clue about any of this

For them, ‘Putin bad man’ - and that’s the end of it.

I don’t think Putin is interested in the Banderites in the west - he’s actually said once that the Poles can have them - but he might end up going there in a few years if it’s the only way out. And it would be by means of escalation which the west maybe want?

Why can’t the Russians in the Donbas just move back to Russia if things are so bad? Their ancestors only moved there for work so what’s stopping them from going back?

As per @Tipp blue's post, you're mistaken.

Are the UK going to be seen to stand up for Unionists until the point that a consensus is formed and referendums held? Of course, and rightly so. But it will happen, and the UK will have no strong desire to stop it happening.

The GFA as far as I understood it makes no specific reference to when or why a poll should be held

My apologies you are right.. the paperwork that paved the way for the GFA makes reference to it and this was passed at the GFA..
The Northern Ireland Act 1998, which gave effect to the Good Friday Agreement, states that a poll will be called by the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland “if at any time it appears likely to him that a majority of those voting would express a wish that Northern Ireland should cease to be part of the UK and form part of a united Ireland”
It's predicted that this will occur when the current 13 year olds reach voting age so they may give it a few years after that hence the 10 year timeframe I gave.
