Except it doesnt really make sense. Why stop at the edge of Moscow if you knew that you're a dead man anyway if you back down?

It's all weird. The only thing that made sense to me at the time was that he realized he couldn't win, and that backing down bought time to attempt to find a bolt hole somewhere, like in Africa. I didn't like declaring for the throne publicly from a thousand klicks away. It usually takes more than he had to pull that one off, though there were reasons to believe he could get away with it.

The way the post-mortem usually goes is that a narrative emerges within days or weeks, historians pore over documents and fight over the narrative for a few decades, and we ultimately end up with a coherent, consensus story that makes more sense than whatever Dr. Strangelove stuff actually occurred.

If he’s not dead within the week then he is part of a cunning plot to attack Ukraine from Belarus. Personally I think he’ll be dead…but who knows….

Cunning plot perhaps but look at the Russian citizens egging him on and his troops to go all the way. Then there is the Helicopters, personnel and plane loss to make it look good. I'm not so sure. Time will tell of course but the power vacuum is underway. Can Ukraine take advantage of this period of supposed insurrection.

The most plausible reason I’ve seen given is the threat to the families of himself and his men. But it was strange the way people got behind him, that must have thrown Putin…….

It's something we will never know for sure,some of them are Russian vets so maybe they were promised by friends in the regular army that a bounty was on offer for turning around.??

No one in the regular army is going to want people who are already paid more than them (and who also have better equipment) to get even more money just for not staging a coup.

With BK at the helm - what could possibly go wrong.....

Say what you want but he knows how to survive a backlash or three.

Having someone crazier than Putin at the helm,that would have ended well for Ukrainian civilians,as those in Mariupol and Bakhmut could testify.

If he had taken over, the extra losses incurred would have pretty much knocked the Ukraine war on the head, at least for now. They would need time to regroup, rearm and most of all have equipment and personnel ready to defeat all the other would-be leaders coming after him.
