There could always be the possibility that they've cooked up this situation to allow Russia to withdraw from Ukraine whilst saving some face. They'll claim their army was victorious in beating the coup, they'll have parades and new celebration day added to the calendar hopefully distracting the fact they've run from Ukraine with their tails between their legs.

That's a reasonable theory. I wouldn't bargain with Putin on something like that if I were Prigozhin for the exact reason you describe, but he's been doing it for decades, so he may be fool enough.

Again, I think the Ukrainians didn't want the international incident right now. There were probably back-channel communications about the flight. Absolutely bizarre that Ukrainian airspace became safer than Russian airspace, for high government officials, in the span of twenty-four hours.
