I am a little puzzled where Ukraine’s fixed wing and helicopter assets are, in so much I’m amazed they haven’t been pulverised by Rus missile strikes. Or if they have been already these Migs won’t be far behind them surely.

The real question is where, apart from taking down slow moving American unmanned drones, is the much vaunted Russian Airforce…conspicuous by its absence, a bit like its Navy….

such a bizarre article that, especially the insistence that arms shipments between NK/Iran and Russia should be "interdicted" which is a geographically remarkable statement

also how is it that a year on into this we are still debating increasing defence industrial capacity?

It’s not 1939 and building wooden aeroplanes…increasing defence industrial capacity doesn’t happen overnight. No doubt it would be quicker if the U.K. was under threat, but even throwing all the money in the world at todays defence technologies takes a bit of time……

A reminder pete that this war started thirteen months ago, and we had several months warning that it was going to happen.

That it takes time is obvious; that we have not done much (if anything) in the time the war has been happening is criminal. Even Chamberlain did something.

What would you expect to see. I’m not having a go, but Eurofighter typhoons have input from U.K., Germany, Italy and Spain, the Engine parts similar. It’s not all under the manufacture of the U.K., similarly even for the US F35 with parts coming from U.K. etc. Ships and submarines take an age to build and cost billions. We have no tank manufacturing capability at the moment, well little, so now we get down to artillery, shoulder mounted kit and ammunition which can be geared up. As far as I’m aware what can be done is being done but new manufacturing plants don’t come on stream overnight and the supply chain is multi country. As I said it’s not like previous conflicts…I think you are right in wanting it to happen but the U.K. can no longer do it on its own…..

Again pete, this war has been happening for more than a year now. Once it became clear what was about to happen production of ammunition should have been scaled up, together with production, maintenance and upgrade facilities for all manner of equipment.

You are right that its not like previous conflicts; when they happened we actually started doing something much earlier than this.

It’s the technology and todays processes I’m afraid. The U.K. was one of the first to assist and gear up, but as I say, it really is not as simple as people outside of the defence industry may think… The U.K. at least can hold its head up…try having a word with the EU……

Pete the EU wasn't in a position to determine our defence budget, defence policy or defence production. The government you support - that we now know was in possession of intelligence showing what Putin was about to do, did nothing - did worse than nothing in fact, as the whopper you still back went into the Commons and talked this utter, complete bilge:

Ellwood warned that was about to happen. I warned about it on the first page of this thread, and numerous instances after that. You are still spouting excuses.

I’d agree Pete.

This war has been a wake-up call for the entire western defence manufacturing industry and not limited to the U.K.

The US was producing approx 20K 155mm artillery shells a month which sounds a lot, but analysis shows that Ukraine is burning through 90K shells a month!

If anyone had the foresight and luck to invest in a company like Rheinmetal prior to the war kicking off then I’d imagine they’d be sitting pretty right now.
