I live on the flight path from RNAS Yeovilton to wherever their choppers fly to. Most weeks you get an, I assume, new or mended chopper of various sorts flying over. Usually small Lynx type ones, the occasional Chinook. Today though, its been a pretty much constant stream of Lynx type ones. Where they are headed, I have no idea, but they head north east of Bristol.

It may be nothing more than a big servicing job being completed, but the last time such a long "droney" sound was in the air, was when the USAF rendevouded with whoever from USAF Fairford for the 1st Gulf war strikes.

@Mutzo Nutzo . FYI.

Hold on to you hats folk it might be about to get bumpy(ier)

Entirely coincidental that there’s a bit more noise from the US that Ukraine isn’t in their national interest…
Just wow! It was coming though. But in international airspace…Wow!

Just noted that it was a reaper not a global hawk. That’s strange in itself as reapers are deep strike drones not usually used for recon.

Hmmmm the plot thickens

It's not like the Russians (well, Soviets at the time) don't have form for shooting down US and other western aircraft, regardless of location.

There'll be a response, but it will be subtle, if not measured.

Aye I can also recall Turkey shooting down a Russian fighter a few years back as well. I think this incident is a little different though as it happened in international airspace.

The RAF provide fighter escorts for Rivet Joint missions over the Black Sea directly as a result of dangerous, aggressive tactics by the Russians. So I can now see USAF F-35’s flying escort missions now and this can only lead to a greater probability of real conflict.

At the end of the clip you can clearly see the damaged prop on the Reaper
Lets say the fuel causes a fault in the drone and there's a short circuit and a spark of ignition, it ignites the vapur trail of fuel to the plane, if the plane is damaged or even ignites its fuel tank, exactly who's fault is it? To follow up, the pilot has to bail out in international waters, what then? pick up and arrest? leave him to freeze? hand him to Ukraine for some prisoner swap? How did they think this wouldn't be recorded? Also, as russia has ran planes to the edge of british airspace northeast of Scotland, is this now an invite for a fuel based weapon system as fuel appears to be fair game.

Given that this was an unmanned (UAV) the Ru pilots took a chance. I’d say they were given orders to intercept and damage the reaper without engaging weapon systems.

I think their aim was to dump fuel over the drone then ignite their afterburners causing the drone to catch fire, however by the footage released today it appears one of the SU-27’s got too close and collided with the drone damaging its prop.

Very dangerous and risky manoeuvre that I’m sure damaged the SU-27 itself and could have downed it as well. Total unprofessionalism from the Russians.

They’ve already engaged RAF Rivet Joints as well over the Black Sea - locking on with fire control and even releasing air-air missiles off their racks (later claiming it was a malfunction)!

If they keep this up it will only end one way and that’s the shooting down of Russian fighter aircraft.

They should have been losing a plane a day since MH17, after all, who knows who is responsible, was the Ukrainians after all...

Thing is Ukraine and the Black Sea region is now (electronically) the most closely monitored region in the world. Any and all electronic emissions are picked-up, recorded and analysed by a myriad of data collection platforms operating across the entire EW spectrum.
