Thing is mate, he's not actually unhinged or mad, far from it, he's always been very calculating.

It's easy to paint him as a raving lunatic, but it's missing the big issue which is what he's done he's done based on a very clear set of objectives and for what he perceived as 'legitimate' reasons. Now thinking those reasons where not rational is another thing entirely.

With hindsight 2014 was the moment that a massive international response needed to have happened, soon as Crimea was annexed and the Donbass declared themselves independent and effectively a civil war started was when the full international community needed to stop that conflict and sit everyone down at the table.

Soon as Ukranians started killing Ukranians on both sides the thing went into a much harder place to resolve, and that continued to worsen until it literally fell off the cliff in February.
