But, for clarity, as you think you have "owned" me with regards the WMDs, the whole thing was a lie, there were no WMDs, that Iraq knew about, WMDs were found after the invasion, but not even the Iraqis knew they were there.

It's a more apt comparison than you realize, in that Russia is questioning Ukraine's right to exist in much the same way that Syria and others question Israel's right to exist.

The reason the Israelis seized the Golan Heights in the first place is that the Syrians were shelling Israel from there for twenty years - the same sort of terrorist attacks that Putin has repeatedly ordered against civilians in Ukraine. This is why Israel's allies looked the other way on that one at the time, and why the position of other nations softened as Israel solidified as an established reality.

It's not like Ukraine was ordering terrorist attacks against Russian citizens prior to being invaded in 2014. The situation here is fairly simple: Putin didn't like the change in leadership that occurred in 2014, so he decided to punish Ukraine by seizing dirt in the areas of Ukraine most inclined to accept his rule.
