Hit the Kerch bridge, eh? While this has some hefty logistics implications, it also seems like a psy-op statement of intent. We're coming for Crimea, and we're not leaving you anywhere to run. So if you come over here...we're going to kill you.

The biggest risk factor right now IMO is this:

Given that the Russians have now disconnected the plant from the grid via shelling, I think their reply will be to let the plant go and blame Ukraine for the result. They can't fuel the generators without diesel, and that will lead to an accident in short order.

The problem with this analysis is that the decision to invade, terrible as it was, didn't just exist in a vacuum - Putin didn't wake up one morning last October and think that now was the time to invade another country, these are long standing issues caused by a series of mistakes (many of them his), some of which are 100 years old. Crimea really was handed over to Ukraine relatively recently and in bizarre circumstances. The Donbass really became part of the (then) Ukrainian SSR for arcane reasons, again relatively (in historical terms) reasonably.

This issue (along with all complex territorial disputes) has to be seriously and competently discussed between nations in a free and fair way, with acknowledgements from all sides that the status quo can perpetuate injustices and keeping it may cause more trouble than it is worth. Just because of his shameful decision to invade we shouldn't forget that there are real issues here with what land is "Ukrainian" and what isn't.
But you can't do that also for the opposite reason - Kievan Rus was there long before Moscow was, and it precedes Russia, and those were essentially Ukrainians. The Tsar when Donbas was 'given' to Ukraine also agreed that it was his "Little Russians", as he called Ukrainians, inhibited the lands, and not ethnic Russians, which was the reason why this happened IIRC.

It has to be discussed in a free and fair way, but this is not a free and fair way to do so - if you want free and fair, why unnecessarily attack and claim that you're denazifying a country and taking it back? Is that diplomatic, or normal in any way?

And it's not - we have the same geopolitical issue with Macedonia currently - they speak broken Bulgarian and are ethnically mostly Bulgarians who live on old Bulgarian land and regions, even the names of the cities are/regions are Bulgarian, but we're not gonna attack them for literally no reason, because it makes no sense and only brings problems. Yet, the powerful Russian bear operates differently and claims it's "theirs" because it was 100 years ago.

Do we go by the fact (nearly) all of Eastern Europe and Nordic people have lived in Kievan Rus? Do they stake a claim? How long until Norway attacks?

Better yet, Ottomans ruled over half of Europe and enslaved us for about 500 or so years, do we just bend over and give ourselves to them now, as "historically" they were here also? Nah, bs.

Ukraine is Ukrainian. To Ukrainian people. Who live there, under an Ukrainian flag.

Also @davids - I saw your question, but I'm glad that the fact he has done what every politician has and opened an offshore account (before he was even in politics) is somehow as bad or worse than dictators attacking countries for personal benefit and ego. Yes, it doesn't fit my agenda, but also he's been involved in those companies, he's not the sole owner, and he technically isn't anymore (I know, that's hard to believe and probably not true, I'm not naive; was it Fat Sam or 'Arry with the offshore account for his dog?). Do you happen to know what the actual sums are, because none of the things people say seem to be to his name, and the costs have gone from 6 mil to 5.3 billion dollars as of recently.

Please don't ever check what Erdogan or Putin have as offshore wealth.

If the latest report is true, the attack on the Kerch bridge has turned out to be more symbolic than anything.

After clearing the wreckage and some repair work then trains will be running again from 8pm tonight. One of the two road bridge lanes out though.

Looks also like a remote detonation on explosives concealed on the truck, Russian civilian driver another man and a woman in passing cars all killed. I'm guessing few will condemn what is inarguably a state sponsored terrorist action.

You’re actually horrendous. That last sentence speaks volumes about you. Have you seen the state of Ukraine after you orks have pummelled it and you’re crying about a poxy bridge!

It's terrible that innocent people have been killed on either side; very few, if any, will be pleased that's occurred. State sponsored terrorist attack, though?

Would you use such language when Russia used strikes on Ukraine? Let's be clear, it's been used heavily for military transportation between Crimea and Ukraine.

A Crimea that Russia annexed through force to boot. It's more than unfortunate that people have died, but most people will accept it's a legitimate target.

That is all you needed to write but in relation to Russia invading Ukraine and targeting civilians with military strikes, kidnapping, raping and torturing Ukrainians, including children! Russia truly is a terrorist state, it is a disgrace.

#whatabout
He must be forgetting about the old Polonium 210 and the Novichok… Never mind the invasions of Georgia, Crimea and mainland Ukraine or the Chechnya catastrophe too come to think of it!

So a war crime is a war crime only when you want it to be mate,

Dead Ukrainians only relevant when they suit your agenda.

You're horrendous yourself as you read that post and ignored that innocent people died on that 'poxy bridge'

You and I both know mate, that civilian stuff is hit all the time and collateral damage expected.

A van load of tnt carried by what looks like an unknowing driver remotely detonated with obvious sight on the ground so knowing other cars would be caught is way different than a fire and forget strike on it,
