The irony here is that he has identified a possible landing point. It just doesn't look like the one we're heading for at the moment. Russia would have to get it together quickly on the battlefield for something like the status quo ante to obtain.

More your area than mine but surely even before their recent military successes Ukraine would not accept a referendum result of a region when significant % of population have fled and that takes place with the Russian troops still there to intimidate those remaining. Sounds like a heads I win, tails you lose proposal tbh as very little to guarantee that Russians would honor the results even if it went Ukraine’s way,

If the proceedings turned into a long, protracted stalemate, it could happen. It wasn't in the cards in the near term, even before the pendulum swung Ukraine's way on the battlefield.

My guess would be that part of such a deal would be the repatriation of those Ukrainian citizens that want to return, prior to the vote, and the departure of both sides' troops from the referendum zones.

I've always thought @peteblue is a good guy.

Of course he has different views on some subjects to other users but I like that, keeps things interesting.

Plus I heard he gives his staff an extra turnip on Christmas Day, such humanity speaks for itself.

Although there have been recent reports of his pub staff taking over adjacent properties but @peteblue assured me personally that he was just legally annexing properties and they'd been his all along in everything but name and legality.
