Indeed, it’s a bit like saying the U.K. should invade the ROI because of SF or the IRA, Putin wants land and an empire but unfortunately he has gone too far and it will be his undoing……

Does he? Is that why he is doing this - for mere aggrandizement?

I ask because Russia already has far more land than its population to begin to deal with, and stretches across more time zones than any other country. The idea that he is just grabbing more land for "reasons" is something put out to comfort the masses by the same media outlets that have been telling utter fibs for the past few decades.

This is far more complex than that, though of course as they always do the media will serve up the simple good-vs-evil meal for mugs to consume.

Again though, seeing it from that point of view minimizes it - it makes the changes that are urgently needed here to seem not so necessary.

Truss advocating 3% defence spending "by the end of the decade" for example, or them getting into "negotiations" to replenish the stocks we've given to the Ukrainians (rather than getting off their arses to ensure production occurs so we can resupply ourselves and them), or the failure to prepare people here for what might happen this winter (never mind start to reconfigure the economy so that people can cope with high inflation), or a serious diplomatic push to expand the circle of allies against this war, or any one of many other things that we should have been doing back in February (or much earlier in terms of the climate crisis).

We should have been acting serious months ago; instead the clowns have been fighting amongst themselves whilst the backers of the clowns keep trying to distract us with nonsense of this kind. Meanwhile apparently sensible people choose to believe them because this is a good cause.

You don’t really understand strategic positioning do you. If he takes the eastern and southern part of of Ukraine, he controls the Black Sea and the Sea of Azov. Try looking at a map….

I don't know if you've ever heard of Crimea pete, but possession of that peninsula has pretty much always meant control of the northern part of the Black Sea (the southern part depends on Trebizond and the Bosporus).
