Negative voting in a two party race with our current electoral system is very scary to me. It effectively installs a dictatorship. No party should have as much power as Labour are going to have. In 5 years, we'll have had 10 years of a government essentially being able to do what it wants, just over 2 parties. Its barely worth Parliament sitting if some of these polls end up being right, we might as well just have Covid style Cabinet decision making.
None of it matters anyway, they can say what they want, but as always external factors will influence what actually happens. Once energy prices soar based on wars/natural disasters etc it all falls apart and doesn't matter who is in charge.
I guess many will take solace from things being just as bad as long as the government has the "right intentions". But I do wonder where the anger currently aimed at the Tories will go when things don't improve.
And don't get me started on how Israel/Palestine is becoming such a large part of people's voting decisions, ignoring things that actually have an effect on their own lives.
The whole system is broken, this isn't democracy (or maybe its exactly as intended)
I agree, though it'd be a lot better if people thought of it like that. Guarantee the vast majority don't go anywhere near that deep level of thought on the issue, its just a potential side effect.TBF Israel / Palestine is one of those canary in a coal mine issues and people are absolutely right to use it amongst all the other factors that determine their vote.
I mean, one of the main reasons the system is broken is precisely because of the corrupting nature of lobbies, rewards and political preference associated with that. There’s no greater example of this in the U.K. than the pro-Israeli lobby, which has for decades sought successfully to put the concerns of the Israeli government ahead of almost anything else domestically or internationally.

Though on all that, if Labour go against Israel things will be very difficult for them, so I doubt things will change in that regard as much as people want it to
Hi mate, have you heard of the tory party?Or we could just be familiar with these people, their activities and history.

I think it is fair to say that we have two choices for government. The tory's or Labour. Take votes away from either and reduces their chances of success. Pipe dreams aside that is the choice the country faces.Nothing would make me happier than for Labour to come into power and do what this country needs, to identify and deal with these urgent problems. I know that the people that form up a good chunk of the leadership group are absolutely incapable of doing it, though.
Oh well, lets focus on that and not getting the tory's out then.Pretty much what the other side of the party was doing in 2017 and 2019
Because the ability for the left to challenge has been tightened up since Starmer got in as leader and the NEC has been captured lock st=ock and barrel by the right wing of the party. Why are those on the Left leaving the party in such huge numbers, when such a disastrous PM, as you say Starmer surely will be, should be a doddle to challenge and topple?
I think you need to give those on the Left a bit more credit, we're not all so cowardly as the ones who have fled already. For some of them though, it seems that their main political aim is to be perpetually in opposition, and insist that they have the right answers whilst desparately making sure they never to prove it.
