I was working full time at 18 , I was actually also working when I could at weekends (around Everton ) to raise extra cash . Taking the military out of it If you’d told me you can work weekends for no pay it’d have cost me money , my limited free time and Everton . I’d have been furious wouldn't you be ?This National service policy isn’t anything new. Countries in Europe do it. Either National service or you volunteer so many days at a hospital or care home pushing patients around.
It’s also not really comparable to national service from decades ago. You more than likely did national service or went down the mines.
I think some young people will be interested in it but a lot won’t. It’s a generational thing.
Interesting to see how it goes to be honest.

I think if you’re in work, college or Uni than it shouldn’t apply. If you’re doing nothing but sitting off outside an off license with your mates till 11pm then maybe that’s who it’s meant for.I was working full time at 18 , I was actually also working when I could at weekends (around Everton ) to raise extra cash . I understand there is a debate to be had about whether long term there is a need for a vocational /national service ideal . As has been said , more eloquently than I can , If that’s the case then have that debate but make it cross party and don’t rush it out in five mins with your plans on the bag of a fag packet . If the governments concern is the military and the security of the nation then don’t cut defence spending .
It’s more performative rubbish to excite deluded people who crave to impose the national service they never experienced on others .

Conservatives plan to bring back mandatory National Service
Every 18-year-old would choose between joining the military or volunteering one weekend a month in the community.www.bbc.co.uk
lol lol lol

Well if that was the case and they meant what you suggest they could have legislated for that , they didn’t that isn’t the case and it’s quite clear .I think if you’re in work, college or Uni than it shouldn’t apply. I get a sense of something much more underhand, 'do your service or we cut your benefits.' 'If you can do your service you can't be that disabled, get a job you lazy bum!', 'It's about time british workers picked british crops, for free!', 'dig for victory!'. It is quite clear who this is aimed at, this is a retreat to outdated values of yester-decade, whilst the media are nibbling away at starmer like they did with 'commie in chief' corbyn and his welcome red carpet to the russkis.I was working full time at 18 , I was actually also working when I could at weekends (around Everton ) to raise extra cash . And, like clockwork, here it is. As I wrote what I did above no less. 'Ding ding ding', that train is never late!I think if you’re in work, college or Uni than it shouldn’t apply. Funny enough I think Rachel Johnson was on pontificating about how they can pick fruit , we need an army of young fruit pickers apparently .I get a sense of something much more underhand, 'do your service or we cut your benefits.' sun readers, white van man, the usual braindead pleb on the street lap it all up.
The beauty of falling standards in schools is they produce thicker young adults, and they're easier to coral than those prepared to try to think for themselves.
What are we, 5 or so days in and it's already tedious and stupid.

But if it gets young people off the streets, into work training or otherwise. And gives them some direction and purpose, what’s the problem? (I think it’s an idea/policy that’s going nowhere by the way).Well if that was the case and they meant what you suggest they could have legislated for that , they didn’t that isn’t the case and it’s quite clear .
It’s a classic case of “I like this idea but not for my kids or grandkids because they’re the good ones . Just all the feckless ones “
I’ve heard cleverly a few times today talking about taking young people out of their social bubbles and ensuring they mix with disparate groups of people . Whilst the person introducing the scheme was videoed as a young person talking about how he didn’t associate with working class people.

Yeah having youth clubs and access to a ping pong table would solve all our youth issues, including knife crime..I think Since 2011 We’ve had local authority youth services cuts of 53% with a 35% reduction in full time youth workers whilst across the board youth services including youth clubs have been cut by 69% with the apprenticeship programme cut by 24.5% in the last couple of years alone . Pardon me if it’s don’t believe getting young people of the street or organise their training is a priority of this Tory government.
