27m is a fair starting point. Nobody would've expected Southampton to seriously ask for 50m plus a 25% sell on fee.

I said weeks ago I expected him to cost 50m. So did others.

It was around the time it was first reported he could be an option because Kubo and Fofana weren't happening.

The general reaction to that was it made no sense because Dibling would cost as much as them.

Yeah, fair play to them. Ballsy by them - and could boomerang on them - but we need to move on now. The risk gets higher and higher for us with each increased bid and the upside gets smaller and smaller with each "counter-offer" adding a sell-on clause.

A tactical retreat might be for the best here...

It's like ringing the estate agent to bid 200k when the asking price for a house is 300k

Yes you want to negotiate because you might get it for 280 or 290k etc but not like 30 or 40% less than the asking price.

Did we know the asking price?
