Transfer Window Assessment

Total disgrace and Martinez has spunked all the cash down the toilet basically;

Ex Wigan;

Robles -- 1.5mil reserve keeper
Kone - 6,5mil reserve forward
Alcaraz - Signing fee for an injury prone 6th centre back
McCarthy - 13mil obviously Martinez first choice

Loans

Barry - Paying 100k a week for him
Deulofeu - No chance to buy later
Lukaku - No chance to buy later

Out

Fellaini - 27.5mil a good price but one of our top two players.
Anichebe - 5mil good fee

I think we've done well on sales fees but rubbish on the players coming in.

Heitinga / Naismith /Gueye / Jelavic still here as well. MASSIVE amount of wages were paying this season for dross.

In a year ONLY James McCarthy will be in our starting 11 and so we've basically swapped Fellaini for McCarthy and a huge amount of wages on players for this season

Disgraceful from top to bottom this window and I can't believe that so few people aren't seeing through this charade.

This. We lost a potentially world class player in Fellaini although we got a good price. Martinez hasn't bought anyone better than the players we already have.

The squad seems bloated now, but the talent is spread thinner. I can't help see us dropping down the table as a consequence.

Instead of an influx of exciting spanish talent we're turning into Wigan. Hopefully we can nick a cheeky cup win of one of the big boys before we're relegated.

Crash, bang, wallop... what a window.

Vincent Kompany ‏@VincentKompany 5h

Everton made two great signings in Barry and @RomeluLukaku9 . Clever piece of business. Arguably the best deals of this transfer window.

He always says the nicest things about Everton. Lets sign him. ;)

Best news of the day is Baines showing he is a class act and an Evertonian through and through. Good on ya lad!

This all day long. I'm not going to fall into the trap of saying it's like a new signing keeping Baines, but how many of us thought he was on his way to utd, absolutely chuffed to bits he's stayed, what Bill should do, is out of the wedge left over from the fell & vic sales is drop 1m to Baines as a loyalty bonus and then offer him a nice juicy contract. come on Bill you no it makes sense.

Well thats it until the next window. 2 players out and 3 players in although 2 will have to be replaced next summer - more nail biting?

A bit of perspective here, BK did well imo screwing Man U and our EX. Must remember that he and Everton were royally screwed over our EX leaving and those derisory offers made. I feel BK was angry with the Mancs and our EX, indeed betrayed by our EX, so well done for turning the tables. No doubt in my mind our EX turned our player's heads. Tried with a silly late bid of 15 mill for Baines, damn [Poor language removed].

But must point out I am not a BK fan. There is the question of Fernado, Ostri? and Minas, I think these were smokescreen bids and did not have a chance in hell of going through on deadline day, but publicly makes BK look good and he can turn round and say "I tried" thus continuing to many fans his mantra of the best Everton fan.

On balance we have come out of this reasonably well.

That's the thing see, we kept Baines who most must've thought was heading up with M62 with Fellaini.

Fellaini wanted to go and I recall a couple of years back most of us said we wouldn't begrudge him the move to a CL club - credit to the board for getting top dollar out of Utd. I'm also wondering if that was a Moyes tactic to give us a bit of a leg up of at least to soften the blow - why would anyone refuse to meet 23.5m release clause then let it go to the wire for 4m extra...hmmmm. Not actually believing that's happened as he'd be a dick to his current club for that, but something certainly doesn't stack up.

Adding Lukaku, Barry and McCarthy - well the jury's out! Lukaku is a beast of a player and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do in the royal blue, Barry - always liked him, definitely age isn't on his side, but as someone else has said, perhaps the role model role is also what he's been brought in for - a bit of mentoring for McCarthy and Barkley. And well, McCarthy - ok another Wigan player - but without a doubt their best player, so let's give him some time and see what he can do,

I do (perhaps mistakenly) believe there'll be money there come January too!

All in all not a bad window at all. We've had 2 clean sheets out of 3, dominating possession and having plenty of shots, just been unable to convert our chances - hopefully in the Big Belgian (no, not our ex big Belgian) we have someone who will slot like a good 'un!

COYB!!

overall I'm happy. Though I would have preferred to buy another player with the excess from the feillani sale, cos we wont be seeing that in January.

Is it too late to write comments? Seems like a good window to me.

1. Baines stays. Maybe this changes in January, but for now this is positive.
2. Fellaini leaves for £27.5M. He didn't appear to want to play here and he didn't really seem to fit the Martinez system. But he is a very talented player, probably will be wasted at United by Moyes. This is neutral; best of a bad situation.
3. McCarthy in for £13M. To be seen how this turns out, but Martinez likes him, so I'll give him credit for the moment. Neutral or positive, depending on your expectations from McCarthy.
4. Barry on loan, with free move hinted at when his current contract expires. Positive.
5. Osman now a squad player, no longer required to start. Positive.
6. Lukaku on loan, positive. Now Everton have added a pair of strikers that netted 29 EPL goals last season.
7. Net transfer income, positive. I don't care whether the team uses it to pay operations, pay down debt, or invest in January. If you think there's a difference between the three, you might not understand how budgets work.

Add these to:
8. GK competition for less than £1M, positive.
9. Kone for £6M, the cheapest proven striker available. Maybe we'll see he can't play anymore, but neutral at worst.
10. Alcaraz free transfer for squad depth. Positive. He was captain, and will be a good backup.
11. Deulofeawayuoo on loan. Positive.

To everyone knocking the "Wigan transfers," let's not forget these relevant points:
1. Baines came from Wigan
2. Wigan won the cup

If you're going to use the ad hominem argument, at least make it better than "I hate Wigan," because it doesn't do much for your image. There's my jarg assessment. I could be too much an optimist. Would like to see the pessimist's view.

ESPN's PL grades. Everton #1

EVERTON

In: Arouna Kone, Joel Robles, Antolin Alcaraz, James McCarthy, Romelu Lukaku (loan), Gerard Deulofeu (loan), Gareth Barry (loan)

Out: Marouane Fellaini, Thomas Hitzlsperger, Jan Mucha, Victor Anichebe, Phil Neville (retired)

The finest window of the lot? Everton held on to one of two high-profile players who seemed set to leave while improving virtually all other areas of the team. Lukaku was a coup, while so many others better suit Roberto Martinez's style.

Grade: B-plus

Good Window, I'm very happy let me give my take for what its worth

1 - Robles = Better back than Mucha from what I seen, a little more premiership experiance and younger

2 - Kone = He did look quick and powerfull last season, scored some good goals, 6 Million is a overpriced for a 30 year old striker but he will contribute this season make no mistake, I seen him play for Levante hes a handful when fit.

3 - Alcaraz - Its a free transfer, adds depth to the sqaud, decent signing

4 - Delofeu - He looks like he'll be a specail player, a spainish international of the future, if we play him enough he may develop while hes still with us.

5 - Barry - His age does not worry me, hes in good shape and has never had pace anyway not part of his game, I doubt he'll keep loosing the ball like Osman.

6 - McCarthy - The transfer will prove worth it in the long run, hes very tidy on the ball and can be creative. He has a very good range of passing.

7 - Lukaku - Fantastic, I can see him getting over 10 goals for us and terriying defences.

The sales of Felliani and Anichebe was good business, neither players really fit into the style Martinez is trying to create, the players brought in do.

Only downside i wish Jelavic, Naismith were moved on, to possible free up funds for January.

Sqaud looks great, first 11 is slightly better with strength in depth now, should set us up for top half finish and seroius run in the cups.

Excellent post.

Just to add to the "Wigan transfers".

Chelsea had no qualms about buying a "Wigan player" when they bougt Moses last year.

Nor had Fergie when he signed Valencia from Wigan.

Spurs bought Wilson Palacios from Wigan.

So what the heck is wrong with buying players from Wigan?

And only one of them is going to be a starter as things stand right now.

But we are Everton....we don't shop at Wigan.

No....leave that to the likes of Chelsea, United and Spurs.

There really is no pleasing some of the posters on this board.

Thay were born to whinge.

However the final paragraph of the article confirms some of the questions re the loan fees and the sell-on clause to Liege:

Everton intend to offer Baines a new contract now the window has closed and, despite making a profit this summer, £2m of the Fellaini fee is owed to his former club Standard Liège while the loan deals for Lukaku and Barry will cost close to £10m. Kenwright, meanwhile, finds himself in the rare position of receiving credit where credit is due.

Hopefully they're a bit out on their figures. If not, we've got £4m at most left over.

I reckon we're at about break even point over the window. Although, if Fellaini was on about £5m per year maybe we've freed up money in wages?
