Top Four Possibility

The EL is like Kryptonite for a club like us.

Spurs finished 3rd last season with a small squad, while reaching the QF. Even Moyes produced some great league finishes during our European seasons.

If managed properly, it doesn't have to create problems.

Europa League can improve our profile and our income. It can allow us to attract a much higher standard of player to the club and encourage our better players to stay. It offers another opportunity to end our trophy drought, another pathway to the Champions League, improves your co-efficient for when we hopefully do qualify, and most importantly, gives us as fans some of the best times you can have following your football club.

Would a Wednesday Saturday schedule in the Champions League suit you better?

The only reason the Europa league is a 'drain' is because people like Dave ram it down the football worlds throats that its an issue.

You get told enough times something is tiring/draining and you will start to believe it.

The fact is we should have enough about us as a club to play the first team at home only and get through the group stages. Rest them all for aways if need be.

Its no different to Wed/Sat except inconvenience of Sunday matches.

No, it actually is a drain. In business terms, it's all about ROI - what's the return on investment from being in the Europa League?

The answer is sadly very little. Whereas the Champions League is well worth the effort.

It's all a sliding scale; there's a reason top clubs play the reserves in the domestic cups these days, because doing well in them means very little. The Europa League is a minor step above that.

Since when do you go to Everton for business?

Its another trophy; another chance to break into the Champions League. Its also a great experience for our fan base who frankly would rather se Everton play every day than even give a hoot about business.

Ironic you dont think Europa is worth it when the end success is Champions League qualification.

40 pages chatting about the very remote chance of a top four place is impressive.
Good to see some optimism ( even misplaced optimism ) returning after the last couple of seasons.

Many teams struggle with it mate, its not the same as a domestic game if you fly to Russia on a Thursday and have to play Sunday lunchtime.

I hope we qualify as it represents a step up the ladder even if the current format is ridiculous but expect to see weakened teams a lot more often.

So pardon my ignorance but why is it different?

745 pm game on Wed
12:45 noon on Sat
Roughly 65 hours between both matches beginnning.

6/8pm game Thursday
1:30 game on Sun
Roughly 64/65 hours between both matches beginning.

Because it is a business, and like any business you only allocate resources where you are likely to see a significant gain from doing so.

The Europa is simply not worth it financially or in terms of a reward, especially when the league offers four spots of equal value and more prize money. Some teams in the top four could play nearly twice the number of games than Liverpool in the run-in if they go far in the cups - unless that is the Champions League, that is simply not an effective ROI.

It's just cold hard fact over romanticism. If the financial difference between the Champions League and Europa League was narrowed, it'd be a different story - and you can say that about the difference between the Premier League and FA Cup too. As it stands, smart clubs simply do not allocate time and resources into domestic cups and at the very least the early stages of the Europa League, because it doesn't make sense to cripple your league performance by doing so.

Did you actually read what I wrote?
I said we would easily be able to rest the first team for at least the away matches in the group stage and should get through. Ergo allocate resources elsewhere.

Plus the four spots of equal value in terms of PL qualification is wrong as the fourth have to go through at least one qualifier.

I go to the game to experience matches with my son. I dont care about business and the more life experiences we have and can take to our grave is better than sitting in on a Thursday night watching significant amounts of top european players play football on TV rather than our lads doing it.

Europa league is only two extra games from Group Stage to Final than Champions League.

The money distribution of europa means an english team will probably take home around 23-30m from Europa league if they win it. Thats quite significant. Also qualify for Champs league.
Granted its not Champions League level prize money but its still significant and anyone who declares otherwise is ignorant at best.
