is on loan so lets give the kid a chance hopefully can do well if he is not good enough here then fine. Hope then we can sell him and get a good fee that will help us as a club then
Just saying he is doing it in the Championship and if we go down, it's likely we'll be using him. If we stay up, he'll probably get another loan. Not talking about selling the lad.

I'm actually quite confident about our team doing ok in the Championship. We've got a lot of young lads doing or have done well at that level. There is obo going to be a massive clear out whatever happens to balance bthe books.

If Simms’s goal against Chelsea was typical Simms that goal today was typical Cannon, he’s all about good movement and clean strikes of the ball. Remarkable progress from him , you would say from his performances at PNE he’s pushed ahead of Dobbin by scoring in the Championship and is ahead of where Simms was at the same age. Let’s hope he can keep progressing.

Simms and cannon could be the answer to all our striker problems, lewin will be back up off the bench, if he's ever fit .

Much as I like both Cannon and Simms as young players who hopefully haven’t reached their full potential yet, I believe it would be hugely optimistic to believe they are the answer to our striking problems next season if we are in the PL. A transfer ban and/ or relegation would change things but both require more development before we can consider them first choice starting strikers.

With DCL permanently crocked and Maupay leaving then it seems that they will be our 2 main strikers

As for Cannon, he really seems to be kicking on on loan, and getting better each week.

When you'd watch him for the 18's, he would score a lot of goals, but the concern for me was always whether he was quick/strong enough to be able to make the grade.

I'll be honest the fact he has got some first team minutes as a teenager, the alertness he displayed when he played and that he's scoring goals in the championship at age 20 is better than I thought he would get to.

The comparisons to Simms are probably fair, in so far as like Simms he had an excellent scoring record at under 18's, but like Simms there are questions about the allround game. For Simms it is more a tactical question though, he is just not developed to do the off the ball stuff, but he does have a level of physicality to occupy defenders. With Cannon his movement is a bit better and he is more natural as a footballer, but lacks a bit of physicality.

That being said, it's now 4 goals in just over 1000 minutes in the championship. That's a goal every 260 minutes or so, and it is trending downwards. For comparison, Gyokores is at a goal every 180 minutes or so. It's better, and he probably does more than Cannon off the ball, but it's not incomparably better, and Cannon is 4 years younger so may have a higher ceiling.

The club may be in the position in the summer, where money is either tight, or signings cant be made, and a 20 year old in the championship, who has scored say 8-10 goals in 2000 minutes may be a really viable option for us to look to utilise. I've not always been the biggest fan of loans, but this oneseems to have been well placed, and James Vaughan seems to be doing this well. Given the lack of resources, at some point there may be a time where a Cannon becomes part of the first team squad.

He's got so much more potential for top level football than Simms.

Yes, that is probably fair. I just worry if he has the natural speed/size to make it mate. But he seems to be really kicking on at Preston which is good to see.

He's always been a good finisher. It's good to see a bit more thought going into youger players development, and it was unfortunately one of many areas that got naively neglected when Moshiri came in.

Do you think he could push into the first team squad next season?

Personally, yes. His improvement in the last say 18 months is nuts. I've always liked his all round play but his goalscoring is really improving too.

I'd rather have him as an option for us right now than Simms and Maupay.

Yes I agree with all of that.

The Bournemouth game was particularly depressing, and remember having a massive cob on, but thought he did really well actually. He was sharp, and linked up very well.

He has really kicked on, I had him below Dobbin as an under 18, but looks like he's jumped ahead of him in the cue (even though Dobbin seems to have had some promising moments on loan too).

Cannon is a good finisher, and stylistically a far more Everton number 9 than Maupay. I don't really understand Maupay, who for me can probably only ever really play as a second striker in our sort of system, yet has never been utlised there.

I'm pleased for Cannon though, along with Mills and Price they may be able to push on (if the latter signs the contract). Given the predicament we are in, some of these younger players could have a viable route to first team football. I don't speak for everyone, but we would probably be better investing time in certain young players over paying reasonable fees for lads like Maupay who are not really much better.
