No TH as most keepers seem to stand on the six yard box, if you look at a worldie shot from Coutinio - Butler was a few yards off his line i.e. further back giving him a slight chance of getting a hand to the ball 3 yards further out the height of the shot , and he would not have been anywhere near it.
A keeper should only come out when its a one on one situation a few yards off his line when the attack is in shooting range should be a few feet off his line not stood on the six yard box where they all seem to stand now .eg our second goal look where their keeper is stood!
He may have had a far better chance -Ours however with TH he probably would of struggled even if he was further back , but any Keeeper standing on his six yard line is inviting a long shot from distance whether it a top corner blast or a well placed daisy cutter alal Naismith!

Keepers are always weighing up risk as if a cross comes in and they are on their line, or a ball comes in over the top and they are napping they get slaughtered. They therefore stand further out almost saying 'if you put it in the top corner fair enough'.

My issue with Howard is I think his decision making has got worse now his reactions have gone. Standing off your line for a direct free kick for example is crazy, as is anticipating which way a striker will go so hitting the ground in a one on one before the striker even hits it. He wasn't worked yesterday and didn't have a chance with Matic's goal, but I maintain that with a good keeper we have a point v City and three v Watford.

I am not claiming TH should have saved that super strike . but my observations of playing football , and watching it for 50 years with Goalkeeping is that in years gone by a Keeper would tip the ball around the post regularly for a corner, as they were imo positioned correctly in today's game most keepers seem to push the ball out if it a good shot back into the danger area, hence imo they are way out of position to far off the line - Butland to me at the moment looks to be brilliant, its no surprise to me on my observations his positioning is helping him sorely its half the battle for any keeper if you are in the correct position for a shot or a cross you have a chance of performing a save - anyway glad their Keeper had a mare for two of their goals on Sat!;)

Missed out on Butland. Would love us to sign a young keeper to go with our young stars

I'm just guessing, but if most top class keepers (and Howard is one - he plays in the Premier League and at international level on a regular basis - he may not be in the top 5 or 10 in the world, but in relative terms he is at an astonishingly high level) are positioning themselves a few yards off their line when play is 30 yards away from goal.... there's probably a good reason for it!

That was a goal whoever was between the sticks, be it any of us, Tim Howard or Manuel Neuer.

He is still the best option at the moment. Robles is not good enough. Maybe we will get a new keeper next summer.

I spoke to my friend who was a reserve Keeper at Oldham made the reserves packed in via injury ( he is now67) he states like me in the old days Keepers never stood on the six yard box positional you take up your position on every individual attack on merit it just seems a new way modern Keepers do it, and observe TH he does it with a few other modern Keepers, not saying he could have saved that thunderbolt on Sat although standing there invites a speculative shot!

I might be misuderstanding your post apologies if so but are you actually trying to say that Howard was standing on his 6 yard line when Matic shot on Sat?
