Tim Howard

My main debate is general goal keeper positioning, not slating TH off as he has had a better season so far, if you seen goal of the month on MOTD2 tonight by a red surprise surprise, it was a cracking long shot by coutinio but Jack Butland positioned further back did get a hand to the shot my point has been if most Keepers position themselves on that six yard box line a shot like that they have no chance of getting close to it as the top corners or bottom corners are left too open for inviting a long shot!

Basic geometry bollocks this though.

I'm a tad confused by your post, are you arguing against further back positioning but butland did get a hand of that shot whereas Howard didn't at all..or was Howard to close to his goal as well?

i think he's trying to say if he was further back instead of on the 6 yard line he might have got a hand to it. personally it wouldve need a world class save and I'm not sure theres many who wouldve saved that matic shot, maybe de gea, neuer types

Neiler vs Dougie, I've been waiting for this match up for quite some time, Neiler's hated him since about 1998 or something.

Great blows traded so far, neither quite able to make the knock out blow, I have a feeling Neiler will win on points eventually.

Tim Howard cannot defy time, as he ages his reactions start to lessen. It is fair to say the shot that flew past him on Saturday was a belter but the further away the greater time there is to react, no matter how good a shot it was Howard was snatching at fresh air, by no means for the first time as he has a very poor track record of getting anywhere near long through the air shots. Brave, he certainly is but at no time has he been perfect, he'd be the first to admit that, his term as a Goodison keeper is coming to an end, its the age process. How many have forgotten his failure to save Citeh's near post effort this season, his size and his frame should have kept that one out but fans are fickle and that is not a geometric thing. What concerns me most is the standard of his back ups which are less than average, this may in fact prolong his career if it's not rectified shortly.

Rather than worry about history look at who will replace Tim, Robles gives me, and many other people cause for concern and we missed a chance to get Lindegarde for free and he could have a long term Prem future. Tim Howard has been a welcome feature at Goodison and I'm certain he will want to return stateside before his career is over thus lifting his profile in the MLS

Look lads, Howard is just one of those keepers. After a largely consistent first few years for us, in recent memory he's been on somewhat of a roller-coaster - crap in 12/13, boss in 13/14, crap in 14/15. Hopefully he'll be back to boss this season, but it's to early to tell despite a decent enough start to the season.

Could we get better? Yes.

However, the money a decent replacement would set us back could be better spent on more priority positions such as a creative player to break down stubborn defences and decent cover at RB and even another back up striker could still be required next summer given Kone's age and the fact that Rodriguez is a gamble albeit at a nominal fee.

But even then there are two things you cannot underestimate, experience and value to the dressing room. The latter of those two points is one that seems to be very important with regards to the current group of players. The manager appreciates this, you have every right to disagree of course but it's a recurring point in many of his interviews so I'm willing to accept it has some importance.

Howard is doing fine thus far, though. The manager has always placed his absolute trust in him so hopefully he can put last season behind him.
agree with a lot of this but I have seen enough this season to think this is a decline that needs arresting rather than a seasons blip.
Keepers can compensate for slowing reflexes with better positioning and decision making. At the moment though I think Howard is in denial of his slower reactions and not focusing on the other aspects of his game.
Interesting chat about geometry being going on but surely it's all down to a keeper judging his own reaction times and then giving himself enough opportunity to save a well hit shot while making the goal as small as possible. It did look to me like he was not giving himself anywhere near enough time to react to that. Still may have gone in but he was nowhere near it. We do see those shots saved regularly, probably wouldn't touch it myself but they do get saved and games change.
His value as a member of the squad is a massive issue as is the reputation of the club abroad thanks to him. But I disagree it's not as important as certain other areas of the pitch. I would have it down as the one position that can undo pretty much everything else on the pitch if a player is way off the mark. And it's usually not a question of spending a fortune to get it right.
Nice guy and probably is great to have about so would be shame to see him leave. makes it even more important that he is really focused and at least concerned about losing his place.

No TH as most keepers seem to stand on the six yard box, if you look at a worldie shot from Coutinio - Butler was a few yards off his line i.e. further back giving him a slight chance of getting a hand to the ball 3 yards further out the height of the shot , and he would not have been anywhere near it.
A keeper should only come out when its a one on one situation a few yards off his line when the attack is in shooting range should be a few feet off his line not stood on the six yard box where they all seem to stand now .eg our second goal look where their keeper is stood!
He may have had a far better chance -Ours however with TH he probably would of struggled even if he was further back , but any Keeeper standing on his six yard line is inviting a long shot from distance whether it a top corner blast or a well placed daisy cutter alal Naismith!
