Tim Howard

People were calling for his head before last year, and he had an excellent season. Hardly did a thing wrong, and was one of the best in the league. I'm confident he'll turn it up in the second half of the season, but if his second half matches his first half, then talks need to be had. Our whole side is having a poor run of form. I don't see anyone questioning Barkley really despite the fact that he's been crap since returning.

They / we certainly were.

He had a very good first half of the season & saved our skin on a number of occasions. One of the best keepers in the league? Nonsense. I very much doubt whether any manager in the Prem would want him in his first team.

People have been questioning virtually all the players: Barkley has come in for a great deal of criticism on this forum and in the ground.

However, even if all the other players were utter tosh it still doesn't excuse T H from the point that has been made over and again: he really and truly isn't good enough - and that would be the case whether he was from deepest Cantril Farm or the Bronx or Timbuk bleeding tu.

You probably need to read the forum a little closer then.

Last season, yeah he was one of top 3 or 4 in the league. This year, he's been below par, but he's only not good enough if we can do better right now, and at the moment, I don't think we can.

See that's where you're wrong. At least I believe so. Howard last year had a magnificent season by his standards, culminating in a genuinely world-class performance at the World Cup. But if you look at his stats from last year they were total outliers. So much higher than his average. And its not that at 35 he's stepped up. It was probably resulting from new manager, new goalkeeping coach, uncertainty about his future, excitement about world cup, etc etc etc. The point is- it was an unsustainable level for him to maintain, and he's currently regressing to the mean.

Doesnt matter. Barkley can be dropped and replaced easily- there are at least 3 other players who can do his role. Howard has no competition for one role on the pitch other than Joel. That's why it warrants so much discussion. Even Distin who has been horrendous can be easily replaced with one of the kids. And it has been questioned. Everyone has been questioned. Every player and the manager. Don't be blinded with love for the great bearded one.
