Not the navy, but my cousin's husband did similar with the Army. Now works in IT project management.It’s the perfect job for someone leaving school, who wants to travel, get a trade and a bit of life experience. Once you get past 25 it becomes a chore and you can leave and earn more money elsewhere. I joined in 2000 and feel like I’m the last of a generation that got the most of the armed forces. I doubt you’ll get many staying in past 12 years now, which is why there are so many gaps at the minute.
Don't think he ever got near the frontline of a major conflict. Lucky for him.
