Armed forces has been on its arse for the last 10 years atleast. The Tories have completely gutted the pension, which is worse off than private pensions and due to personell cuts a 6 month deployment is now a 9 month deployment. Factor in, that it's also a strict career. A promising school leaver would steer clear of it and could have a much better life in the private sector.

It’s the perfect job for someone leaving school, who wants to travel, get a trade and a bit of life experience. Once you get past 25 it becomes a chore and you can leave and earn more money elsewhere. I joined in 2000 and feel like I’m the last of a generation that got the most of the armed forces. I doubt you’ll get many staying in past 12 years now, which is why there are so many gaps at the minute.

I see that idiot Grant Shapps is proposing scrapping still workable ships because of a manpower shortage. Now here’s a new idea, why not get off your arse and recruit some more sailors into the navy. We are not fighting many wars on the ground, nor indeed in the air. In fact the only potential issues are with sea trade lanes both in the far east and the Middle East. We all know the man is an idiot but ffs…….

My mate runs a recruitment agency. But I don't think he specialises in defence though and there's absolutely no way he could find Michael Keane employment.

I did my degree while I was serving, just used my ELCs to pay for it and had to contribute 20% of it.

The quals you get through the apprenticeship are pretty basic but I think you can accredit them towards higher quals when you leave.

You say that but my nephew is determined to do medicine after he finishes his A levels and he goes to Army cadets and its going to be much easier and much more financially beneficial for him to do medicine through the Army system rather than the further education system. They basically fund everything as they are crying out for medics in the forces.

Imagine being the poor Type 45 that looked at your sister ships called Daring, Defender, Dragon, Diamond and Dauntless, and you end up as... Duncan.

Also where did all the cool ship names go? Victory (I'm aware that's still a commissioned Naval vessel), Indefatigable, Leviathan, Conquerer, Colossus, Revenge, Thunderer, so on. Is it those damn Wokies to blame again? Is the Navy too Woke to want violent-sounding ship names now?



Perhaps it's one we'll have to outsource to a foreigner?
