The position of Bilyaletdinov

He's a bit of a softie. You can certainly see the ability there, but it will never be consistent imo.

Arteta and Pienaar weren't good (and deserve just as much stick), but that doesn't excuse Bily's play. His sole reason for being on the pitch is to create attack.

Earlier in this thread I suggested playing Billy wide right alongside Coleman, giving Billy licence to drift infield onto his left to have a pop on goal or feed Coleman on the overlap to cross from the byline.

Thought they linked up superbly last night when Billy came on, doing just this.

This.

Billy looks like he plays with the world on his shoulders at times.

With Coleman backing him up he looked to be enjoying his football much more.

I think he doesn't like pressure. Thats when he goes gash.

But with a natural fullback like Coleman running on he looked much better.

There was a great understanding between the two

Definitely this. It's the only way to play a naturally left footed player on the right. Coleman would give the true width and penetration, allowing Bily to play inside of him and use his left.

Matt, rather than it being an 'understanding', I think the way they both play just naturally clicked, their understanding and reading of each other's movement and play will develop if they are given a decent run.

It's what happens defensively that is still a concern though, if Coleman and Bily both played, there would be a lot of responsibility on the centre backs to cover.

Agree. But I think if Billy's playing happily because he's got a good understanding with someone he plays with I think the defensive part of Billy and Coleman's play will be shown.

Did you see Billy went straight over to Coleman when he crossed it in to Osman to congratulate rather than the scorer?

Billy's lack of pace - was made up for by Coleman's and they were looking for runs and one-twos etc.

Natural compliment.

Hibbo we know he's a good defender doesn't naturally run forward does he.

So Billy gets caught often.

Billy-Coleman is a good little partnership in my eyes I think. Something that balances out Pienaar and Baines too.

I can't say the same for Neville-Billy or Hibbo-Billy.

But I could have for Neville-Donovan because Donovan had the pace to make up for Neville.

Hopefully get to see this partnership in a couple of matches through the season. Coleman was given a lot of space as well as making some himself last night as you might expect against lg1 opo. Forgiving his defensive lapses & Bily being available, i'm sure Moyes can pencil in 1 or 2 home games to try out this setup again-no easy games as such to do it, but possibly some more siutable than others. As mentioned Bily doesn't enjoy being jostled for the ball so most aways in the prem wouldn't see this working too well. Not a lot of time for Bily to impress last night but I will remain positive re his value to the team going forward.

Agree with this. We certainly need to have at least one of the players on each flank to have a bit of pace. We need to maintain the impact of Pienaar with Baines on the left, and there are plenty of options in the centre, so if Bily plays, the right flank is the only option. Coleman is the only RB we have with pace, so that should be the natural combination. As you say, If Donovan ever arrives then Neville would be my preferred choice behind him.

Having a similar threat down each side, with Arteta, Fellaini, Rodwell, Cahill, as central options, and a massively strong bench would be so sexy.

giving us width and pace going forward with two good partnerships down the wings, pinning down opposition full backs and allowing us to flood the midfield thus taking control and with our passing ability (when on form) rip them apart

The idea of two DM's (Heitinga/Fellaini) would give cover for Coleman's defensive frailties (and Baines's for that matter), with Arteta in a more free central role would be nice. That's even before we call on Cahill, Rodwell, Guaye, Osman.

It's ON!

Also think playing Billy alongside Coleman has a great potential, but it would require really disciplined performance from Fellaini or Heitinga as DM (still hate an idea of Arteta pushed into more free role). Hopefully we will see it sooner rather than later, but not before we will draw some more games, we should win (Moyes apparently likes to learn it hard way).
