The Oldies Thread

Top kids telly that back in the day.
Don’t make telly programmes like that anymore.

Few more I can think of;

Worzel Gummage
Why don’t you
Jonny Briggs
Why dont you.
There's an advert on just now with the
Why dont you bit.

Remember it was .
Why dont you turn off your television set and do something less boring instead.

I also remember the periodic testing of air raid sirens during the cold war 1960's.

Scary times. :(
There was a siren on the water tower in Tranmere in the mid fifties that we knew was tested once a month always on a Friday evening. Growing up reading war comics and watching endless war films we knew what they were about. Then when I heard it going off late one midweek evening I was convinced that Russian bombers were on the way. I bricked it.

When I was a kid we used to play in the air raid shelters built for Camel Laird Workers in Tranmere. They were massive.

Those pics are fantastic. I'm reckoning that those vertical ladders photographed from ground level are ones that I tried for ages to climb down from the top. They went up the ventilation shaft and emerged up the monkey steps in lower Tranmere.

Smashed my teeth on an improvised go-cart on Holt Hill, bawled my eyes out. lol

Across the road from our house was a big house that was a home for abandoned kids, run by Nuns. Proper "Call the midwife" stuff. They would let us use their knackered old prams to make into go carts that we would then race down the path to the beach,

Different days.

....clearly remember Margaret St swimming baths in Everton having a load of cubicles with baths in. Never used one myself, but they were busy. Also remember the old tin bath in front of the fire. Saturday night was usually bath night.
Used to go there once a week with school. Also to Garston baths, not with the same school obvs
At Garston they had two rows of bath tub cubicles in the mens section and presumably the same in the women's
A seperate Women's only swimming bath and a general pool
The Victorians were keen on cleanliness.
Even in the becoming affluent 60s many houses lacked basic pluming and paying a shilling or whatever was probably easier than doing the fill the tin bath rigmarole.
Also went to Cornwallis St salt water baths and Woolton...is it still going?
And the Turkish baths on Wavertree Rd just up from the Lamb Hotel.
