There was a siren on the water tower in Tranmere in the mid fifties that we knew was tested once a month always on a Friday evening. Growing up reading war comics and watching endless war films we knew what they were about. Then when I heard it going off late one midweek evening I was convinced that Russian bombers were on the way. I bricked it.I also remember the periodic testing of air raid sirens during the cold war 1960's.
Scary times.

When I was a kid we used to play in the air raid shelters built for Camel Laird Workers in Tranmere. They were massive.

After wanting to get into this place for years the chance came about and we lept at it. Apart from one of the shafts getting breached accidentally by builders in 2008, this place has been sealed for 30 years. No one has ever done a report on the place or photographed it properly until this week...

Those pics are fantastic. I'm reckoning that those vertical ladders photographed from ground level are ones that I tried for ages to climb down from the top. Used to go there once a week with school. Also to Garston baths, not with the same school obvs
At Garston they had two rows of bath tub cubicles in the mens section and presumably the same in the women's
A seperate Women's only swimming bath and a general pool
The Victorians were keen on cleanliness.
Even in the becoming affluent 60s many houses lacked basic pluming and paying a shilling or whatever was probably easier than doing the fill the tin bath rigmarole.
Also went to Cornwallis St salt water baths and Woolton...is it still going?
And the Turkish baths on Wavertree Rd just up from the Lamb Hotel.
